What your friend is talking about is called bulimia. You're right that it's dangerous -- she will lose nutrients, the lack of balanced electrolites can make her heart beat out of rhythm, and her teeth can get damaged by the stomach acid. Sometimes bulimia has an emotional component, not just weight loss. It's hard to know how much weight she will lose in a week. It's great (and hard right now) that you care so much for your friend. I know you'll make the right choice on who and whether to tell.

I don't mean to sound rude or harsh, but that's kind of like asking how much blood can you lose playing russian roulette.
Tell your friend she can lose 6 ounces (the weight of the enamel on all her teeth) or 170 pounds (her life) - nothing in between.
And consult a psychologist.

Your friend has a serious problem if she is thinking about that type of weight loss. the condition she may have is call Anorexia nervosa. the best place to get infomation on this and other types of eating disorders is either a doctor or look up this web site www.anred.com, i hope your friend snaps out of this and looks for other ways to lose weight. i now how hard it is to lose weight, i lost 35lbs and its also hard to keep it off, i have put 10lbs back on. good luck

try to talk to her and tell her how you feel show her stories and cases of other girls who went through the same thing just dont tell some one like the guidance counselor in school if you go to school b/c she will fell like you betrayed her with a person that she dosent even trust . try to get her to eat atleast one fruit with out throwing up if she still throws up then tell her or his parents and i think you can lose from 5 up to 8 lbs or some where around there.

tell her that it is a downward spiral. you WILL NOT lose weight. you will fluctuate like crazy which will only spur on the cycle. once a person realizes they can eat and get rid of it, they eat more and more and more and "get rid of it" (by throwing up) but really you arent getting any benefit. you still absorb cals even if you throw up. tell her its pointless, all shes doing is hurting herself and in the end she WILL NOT LOSE WEIGHT.
