My dog urinated in bed the other morning. Totally out of character! My 5-year-old spayed Rottweiler had cruciate surgery 7 days ago. She urinated in her kennel at the vet right after waking up from anesthetic...not uncommon. She's not had an accident in the house since she was a pup & she has been recovering from the surgery remarkably well. She's very well-behaved.
My Rott never sleeps on the floor and early in the morning she went to the floor which is not typical. She was licking between her legs a lot and that's when I discovered she had urinated in the bed.
Her bathroom habits are totally normal. She urinates one time outside, & empties her bladder. Were she urinating frequently, I would suspect a bladder infection. But I really don't believe that's the case. If she had a pain response from moving the wrong way on her leg, I'm sure she would have yelped. If surgery related, why after 7 days? She looks guilty as if she's done something wrong. Why would she do that??

P.S. I am not asking for an on-line diagnosis or veterinary treatment only an opinion from an educated person. So, if this is not you, why don't you just pass this question on by? Thanks.

My Sympathy to you and your Rotti. A cruciate surgery is very invasive. Your Little Girl has been through a lot.

While it is "illegal" for a doctor to make a diagnosis over the internet, I think I am safe in saying you SHOULD call up the surgeon and discuss the complications. It could be anything from psychological trauma to surgical complication. Only the doctor and staff involved in her surgery will be able to tell you specifically. They also may want to do an examination, which is not a bad idea. All her nerves should be tested and they may take radiographs.
Hang in there, chances are she's going to be fine. Reassure her and take her out for more potty breaks than usual.
Let us know what happens!

Best of Luck:)

urinating right after waking from surgery...NOT uncommon at all. It could very well be a bladder infection, but could possibly be that she is having trouble getting around, and after only seven days she is still in a lot of pain. Cruciates take a LONG time to heal! She may just sit there while she has to go and is in too much pain to get up until it is too late. Let your vet know what is going on. If it is not an infection, wait and she if she stops doing it once she is more mobile.

You said it happened a few days ago. Then you say it was 7 days after surgery. I'm a little confused on that point. When was the accident?
If going outside is difficult due to stairs, or other obstacles she may not have wanted to go outside. If you had been helping her get around, and that time you didn't, that may be why.
It's worth a call in to the vet, but I don't think it's anything to worry about right now. Watch her for signs of bladder infection. It may be in early stages now and either the antibiotics she is on for the surgery will kill it, or after she finishes the meds, the infection will come up and start showing symptoms.
Good luck
PS, dogs are clean animals and are very embarrassed when they soil their beds. You didn't imagine her feelings.

If I were you, I would also call my local talk radio stations, & ask them if they have a Veterinarian talk show duriing the week, & at what time. Then you can tune in & ask your question of a real Vet. We have one on Saturday in my home town, and he is a blessing for people who have questions such as yours, but don't have a fortune to spend going in to the Vet every few days. Also, If your dog had surgery 7 days ago, the Vet who performed the surgery would probably expect you to call him and ask about this matter. If not, he SHOULD! Does he expect any follow-up visits? If so, you can ask him at that time.

Hi

Im not going to even touch this one.. I can tell you to see your VET. Absolutely nobody with any professional degree in any animal science areas should be out here handing out specific medical advice online,, and to you ...

You have No idea if anyone who says they are a VET or tech has a clue what they are talking about...

Call YOUR vet the one who did the surgery!

She very well could have a urinary tract infection. This isn't uncommon after surgery, but there is no way of knowing without a urinalysis being done & an exam by your vet. Please discuss with your vet.

Vets and techs are not allowed to diagnose online...it's against the law...so if someone says they are a tech or vet and gives you medical advice for your dog, they are either a liar, or unprofessional.
