Depends on the cause. If the cause of the infection is mycological (fungus) then urine, which contains heavy but safe amounts of ammonia, is a good cure. If the cause is bacterial, then alcohol is actually a better cure, using an eye dropper loaded with Bacardi 151 or another clear but hard core alcohol (such as >100 proof vodka) will work wonders. Just be sure to let it run back out eventually, each treatment will break up the infection just a bit and a few minutes later you will feel a warm and nasty feeling of something trickling out your ear. Leaving it in there to dry is bad, because the sugars in the alcohol eventually actually feed the bacteria.

Your friend is repeating an old tale and there is no truth in it. It would be better to use hydrogen peroxide to wash out the ear canal. In the days before effective antibiotics, gentian violet was used...but stained the ear a purple color. If you have an ear infection, it is likely to be otitis media (an infection of the inner ear) and can be treated with either oral medication or by ear drops. See your family doctor. Urine is not sterile and may contain various bacteria, the warmth may be soothing but there is nothing to cure an ear infection.

I have a son, Joey Niceforo, who is a young 27 year old tenor, with a group called "DESTINO" recording in Vancouver Bc, Canada.
For the last few weeks Joey has had a cold. Just a few days ago he developed an ear ache, a swollen ear and loss of hearing. He was diagnosed with serous otitis media (middle ear infection).
The major concern we have is that Joey and the Group DESTINO have been booked to open the Marie Osmond show in Disney World on April 3,
Have a quick remedy for our son??
Joey's ear got better just before flying.
He also got the special ear plugs for flying, and arrived in Florida, from Vancouver, on April 1st. On April 2nd he told us the ear was almost 100 percent, and he will, with the other, great DESTINO tenors be performing, in the COLORADO BALL ROOM DISNEY WORLD tonight at 7 pm.
This help was so effective, and helpful, to our young Canadian tenor, Joey Niceforo. I'm sure this input and therapy advice will, and has helped others.

I heard this growing up, too, but it's simply unsanitary! I know urine is supposed to be sterile, but that fact depends on how healthy the source was. What if they have a UTI?
Infection can be very painful. Antibiotics and a heating pad are the best way to go. :)

Well, I have heard that it is true, my mom says it really works but it sounds disgusting to me, so I have never tried it, where I live, (Brazil,SA) everybody uses it for ear infections. My mom says urine is clean when it is warm, it gets germs in it, as time goes by.

Dont't attemp to do it yourself remedy. Especially the ears, eyes, and mouth. Always consult with your doctor. Not even get yourself med from the counter. It is risky for your health and future.

Urine is in fact sterile. However, it is not an antibiotic. If you have an infection, you need treatment, not a sterile solution.

Don`t try it. It could cause a secondary infection. I have used warm oil and it will soothe it for a while.
