No. Think about this for a moment. ALL cities have good parts and bad parts. New York is no different than any other city. I was in the Navy and xisited many cities in the Far East. As a tourist in a foreign country in a big city, I was apprehensive about the bad parts, but I learned the bad parts are easily avoided by just being aware of where you are, to sense the environment in a manner of speaking. I have a penfriend in Queens who I have been corresponding with for over 2 years, and she tells me things, and there are some places she does not go in New York, but these particular places are very few in number. She tells me she loves the city, and goes almost anywhere whenever she pleases. So, I say, NO, do not be afraid of the city. Take a few precautiions, do not carry a large amount of cash, leave the credit cards, leave the expensive cameras, dress down with ratty jeans and a jacket., In essence, try to blend in with the locals and skip the obvious luxuries like big diamond rings and gold chains. Obvious wealth makes you a target for the few out there to get you. And, there are only a FEW compared to the population of New Yourk who are out to take advantage. Go, and enjoy the experience of the BIg city.

I am a Southern girl who spent eight days in New York and discovered, to my surprise, that I love it. I met the nicest people, and even the scary people were nice. Seemed like everyone went out of their way to be friendly. Of course, there are bad areas - just like everywhere. A cop did tell me not to take the subway's Red Line. He said it was named the Red Line because they couldn't call it the Blood Line. Enough said. But go! It will be a most memorable experience.

Like almost anywhere else, some parts are still bad/dangerous. But, you can still come and have a good time; the crime rate isn't as high as it was in the 80s/90s. There are usually lots of police officers in the bad areas to combat crime, etc.

NYC (Manhattan at least) is not scary or dangerous. I mean, you have to be careful and keep an eye on your wallet, but it's not constantly dangerous. The people are matter-of-fact but will help you if needed. Be cautious, but enjoy NYC because it's a great town.

Juliani cleaned up NYC. Stay near the tourists centers in Manhattan and you should be fine. The bad things are there if you look for them, but the city is not like it used to be. Stay in midtown Manhattan. You can walk to Central Park, Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center and Times Square.

Its getting harder and harder to find a bad neighborhood these days....
I have walked over the brooklyn bridge on a saturday night at midnight, and the bridge was full of tourists taking pictures...
I have friends who take the subways at all hours of the night, and so do I....
You can certainly find drugs, but generally the people using them in manhattan are well paid yuppies.
Generally anywhere you go in Manhattan is pretty safe these days... even most of Harlem (assuming youre reasonably street smart)
Good sized chunks of brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx are no-go zones for me, but who cares...theres plenty of city.
