Wash DC OK Im not an expert or a middle eastern person but have traveled a bit.
Its an historic area including the the area of the birth of civilization. A rich heritage of culture -language/food/religion/tradtions and modernity. i think it would take much reading, study and travel and ideally to live/interact with the people rather than in a protected compound or be in the army in a war to come up with an accurate idea. Not much info in these answers here that i have read so far that could behelpful if you are truly interested. Perhaps try a different category and get some knowedgable people to answer you.

I'm from central West Virginia and I worked and lived in Saudi Arabia from 1980 until 1994. Many of the middle easterners are good people but radical Islam gives them a bad name. When you start teaching Koranic verses to a five year old and continue through his teen years, you create a mind that doesn't respond to reason. Many Islamic leaders teach Islam or the sword, in other words either you be a Muslim or they kill you. The more moderate middle easterners are afraid to speak out because to do so is considered blasphemy and is punishable by death.
