I'm going to get my teeth professionally whitened soon and knowing that whitening isn't permanent, what are the foods and drinks I should avoid to make the whitening last longer.

I know I shouldn't be drinking fruit juices or sodas or red wine. I should avoid cherries and blueberries.

What else?

::General Staining::

- Soda Pop: It can be your teeth's worse enemy. The acid in pop can "eat" your tooth's enamel to cause cavities. If you must drink pop try sugar free or use a straw. A straw allows less sugary, tooth staining liquids to reach you front teeth.

- Coffee and Tea.: It stains teeth destroying your naturally white smile. The heat from the coffee can also cause small fractures in your tooth's surfaces. Try drinking cooler coffee and use a straw or brush your teeth after drinking coffee or tea.

- Smoking will cause a build up on teeth that can cause a yellow to orange color staining. These stains can take longer to lighten.

- Food such as curry can stain your teeth...

Anything that has color can stain your teeth. The key is to avoid foods or drinks that you use a lot. Like if you are a coffee or soda drinker and sip it all day, or a snack you keep munching on. Also, avoid acidic foods and drinks they allow the color to penetrate faster. The best is to do what they used to teach everyone, brush and floss after each meal and snack with a good quality soft toothbrush. If you keep them clean the stains won't have time to absorb. Good luck and take care of them so they last your whole life time.

Yes, you are correct with the above. If you must drink dark colored liquids, you could try using a straw. Good oral hygiene ie: brushing and flossing at least 2 or more times per day will also help remove surface stains, plaque and calculus (tartar) which can also make teeth appear less white and dull. Good luck with the whitening and if you experience any sensitivity you can try using a toothpaste for sensitivity, OTC fluoride rinses, such as ACT and in-office fluoride treatments will help decrease this.

Dark liquids such as coffee, cokes, tea, wines etc can stain the teeth if consumed on a regular basis for an extended period of time. Once you complete the whitening treatment and you notice your teeth yellowing, a single bleaching session will "touch-up" your teeth.

Coffee, tea, cigarettes. I don't think food really matters. The dentist never ask you what food you have eaten. If you smoke the hygienist has to do a deep cleaning. MY scientific evidence, Coffee & tea stains the bottom of a coffe cup so I guess it also stains your teeth.

Anything that would stain a white Tshirt---avoid, or use in moderation. After eating or drinking things with the dark color, rinse your mouth out with water.
