My mother just had new cherry cabinets put in her kitchen. The painter says it's best to polyeuthane the oak panelling that surrounds the kitchen table. Can you stain to polyeuthane to match the cherry cabinets or can you paint over the oak panelling?

Trying to stain over the poly to match the new cherry cabinets is a possible long shot and does not produce a very good look. You can paint over the poly. With a citrus based deglosser wipe the paneling several times . If the rag does not have contaminates on it from the last wiping you can after 30 minutes apply a bonding primer over the poly it has to be a BONDING PRIMER such as Kilz original or Kilz Total or Zinzers 123 or Zinzers Coverstain. Give it 24 hours dry time for this situation (even though it says 1hour) then apply two coats of a high tech acyrlic or if your capable you can use an oil base.Do your self a favor and do not use semi gloss or gloss on a vast area such as a wall(it looks terrible) use a satin or an egshell.

You can take a wet cloth and wipe down the paneling. That is the result of a clear polyurethane. If that is a color she wants then do that.I would not try to match it with stain. I would sand lightly before doing anything including polyurethane. If she wants to paint it which may look better if it's that old and you have beautiful cabinets the old paneling may take away from the cabinets. If you are going to paint paneling you must lightly sand, put on a primer and then I would buy a good kitchen and bath paint to paint it. Don't try to match the cabinets. Use another color that goes with something in the room that your mom likes or a contrasting color to the walls if they are painted. The kitchen and bath paint levels itself out, fills defects and resists moisture. Good stuff. Good luck.

you can either paint over the paneling using kilz or a product called Gripper sold at Home Depot as your prime coat then finish with Latex Semi Gloss or depending on the color your paneling is now you can mix the cherry stain in with the poly and apply this over the paneling

I'd just rip it out because when you paint any kind of wood grain it looks cheap and bad. Trust me I've had some really bad kitchen cabinet painting experiences!!!! though you could use a stain and it would look okay..just no actual paint oka? lol. Good Luck Watever you do!!

neither. if it's real oak wood paneling, you have to sand really good. put on a primer for paint but not for the stain and then your paint or stain. they have cherry stains. match it up and theer you go. painting is not an easy project.

The easiest way to paint over any type of gloss finish is to use a liquid de- glosser which can be purchased at any home center or hardware store, it works and eliminates the mess of sanding.

YES AND YES either way you need to sand. to paint over you just need to scuff the ploy a bit and use a product call kliz (?spelling) then just paint it how ever. if you wanna stain it you need to sand the whole thing down to the wood.then fine sand it stain it to match and poly it. it might be easyer to pay some one to do it. you do have a 3rd option they sell a texture wallpaper that you put over paneling and then paint GL

You can find stain to match just take a small sample to your paint store of choice and they will match it for you and tell you just what you have to do.
