I don't understand allowing a person to suffer so their family can sit beside them and watch them slowly die. I think the more humane thing to do is to end their suffering. I would never want to watch someone I love suffer.

It is a crime, and punishable by law...though the prison sentence is usually quite short and rarely is the entire sentence served. This is a true story. My husbands Aunt was sick and admitted to the local hospital several years ago. She was very ill and they where running test on her to see what was wrong. She privately told her husband she though she had cancer and if she did she didn't want to suffer. He left the hospital, went home and got his hand gun. Took it back to the hospital and shot her in the head and killed her. He was arrested and spent less than a year in the state MINIMUM security prison. An autopsy was done on Aunt Phyllis. She did NOT have cancer. She had a kidney stone. She was euthanized, by her husband of 40 years for a kidney stone that would have naturally passed in a day or so.
Moral of the story...it ain't over till it's over.

my personal opinion is that there are circumstances where it should be allowed.
I remember a case here where an old man, the husband of a couple who were like 80 years old... been married for 60 years or something like that... and the wife was terminal, and in constant pain. the man snuck a gun in, said goodbye, (and from my understanding.... tearfully) shot her dead. then turned the gun on himself.
... and it jammed.
now if theres a punishment for applying euthanasia... thats it.
honestly the kind thing to do sometimes, is help it along. there are circumstances where survival is much more tragic than suicide/death.
but, it mustn't be something that can be forced on someone either.
edit:>>"Moral of the story...it ain't over till it's over. "<<
nah. sometimes its over long before its over. but the real moral is that you shouldn't act too rashly.... sometimes the person really is terminal, and really is best off in that sort of circumstance.

It is intrinsically evil, always like taking the life of the innocent (abortion). Even when you think the intent is good or justified
regardless of circumstance. Since when do we choose to turn the truth upside down? Come on people think!

There is nothing "noble" about suffering a painful death.

try to kee the reponses humanistic??????
so in other words "don't answer if you disagree"
the problem (from a secular standpoint) with euthanasia is that there will not be a line drawn. where is it drawn???? and who is to say where it should be drawn??? how do you accurately measure suffering. you cannot. we all suffer....and it is unexplainable to the rest of the world.
from a non-secular standpoint.....jesus did not just say "o well, they're gonna die anyway, just kill em' now". he healed them
and if don't be naive enough to believe people are not miraculously healed and cured without medicine. because not only have i seen it...i have experienced it

I think everyone deserves the right to die with dignity. Such a personal decision should be just that, personal. It should concern only the patients, their families, and the medical staff involved.

Everyone has the right to die with dignity, and there is nothing dignified about having someone inject poison into your veins like an executed criminal. Murder is murder, regardless of the motive and regardless of the victim. Everyone who commits a murder thinks he has a valid reason.
