1) They are not interested in the one asking the question and are cutting the conversation short.
2) They are too embarrassed to admit that they are alone and looking.
3) They are out of a bad relationship and are too wounded to get into another one right away. Especially if the one asking looks like their ex in anyway.

My friend recently had to use this on a guy who had become a stalker...she went so far as having my boyfriend's best friend leave this guy a voice mail because he would not leave her alone.
Perhaps another reason could be because she's a stalker and thinks some guy is more into it than he really is.
Bottom line, if a chick uses this line on you and isn't exactly true, she just isn't that into you and can't find a better way to tell you no (or in the case of my friend, nothing else worked).

Some women don't want to hurt a guys feelings by telling him that she's not interested in him, so they pretend they have a boyfriend to back the guy off.
Some may pretend they have a boyfriend for the sake of their ego... because if they don't have a boyfriend, it could make them appear less appealing to other guys.

most of the time women say they have a boyfriend to get rid of some guy. I think that's a nice way to get rid of somebody you don't like.

not to be mean or anything but maybe its you or are they your friend telling other people. in that case maybe since a lot of people have boyfriend/girlfriend they feel abnormal. there is peer pressure too. i guess it really depend on the person and the person that asks.

Sometimes a woman will say that to a guy when she is either intimidated or doesn't want to go out with him or both.
