My little boy is at the age that I want to try potty training him. He also is at the age I want to switch him from his crib to a toddler bed. What do you think is better to do first???

Switch him to the toddlers bed first that will make it easier to incorperate both day and night training as he will be able to get out of bed to go if he feels the need... If he were in a crib and felt the need to go and was unable to go in the toilet it can actually set the training back a bit because he was unable to associate the sensation with the proper action...

I would do the switching from the crib to the toddler bed first. You can only potty train your child when he is ready and wants to go like big people.

I don't get the connection. Why rush out of the crib? I am all for keeping kids in a crib as long as possible. Both of my boys safely and successfully climbed out of theirs for more than a year. They actually seem to like the comfort and coziness of being in the crib.

I guess I was late at everything. I didn't potty train my oldest until he was 3 1/4 years old. It took a week at most. He was dry through the night for quite some time before we started. First he was potty trained and then we got rid of the crib.

I hope he is showing signs of being ready to lose the diapers.

I switched my daughter to a toddler bed right around the same time we started to potty train. She was showing signs like being dry for a long period of time and she was able to get up and down, walk around, and stuff on her own as well. A lot of people told me I switched too early (she was around 16 months old), but she hated her crib and cried for a big girl bed. It's a small toddler one with half side rails and it's low to the ground.

Personally, I say do what your son is ready for though. As long as he is showing signs of being ready for either, go ahead and do whatever comes naturally. It'll be harder if he doesn't want to than if he shows an interest.

Good luck!

I switched my daughter to the big girl bed first and then she was potty trained. The reason for this being if they need to get up during the night to go potty then they can get up by themselves instead of crying to get out of the crib or worse yet trying to climb out of the crib and get hurt. It just made more sense to do it that way. I didn't want to introduce 2 big changes at once. I let her get use to the idea of the big girl bed before even mentioning potty training.

It all depends on the child as for putting him in a toddler bed as soon as he starts climbing or trying to get out of his crib is a good sign hes ready. As for potty training He will show signs when he is ready like taking of wet dipars, if hes dry after naps. But boys are normally harder then girls. Also The Elmo potty time movie really motivated my son to us the potty. Dont push on the potty thing to much tough it could scare him .

There is no right answer, as both happen at about the same time. When he is ready for potty training, he will fall into it easily enough. If he can climb over his crib rail (or has fallen trying), it is time to move him into the toddler bed.

I would do the big boy bed 1st. Reason being is that you are going to be saying the words "big boy" over and over again during these transitions. Once he understands that big boys sleep in a big bed and not a crib like babies then he will understand that big boys go on the potty.

My son is 4 years old and I switched him to a toddler bed first, so he felt like a big boy and then he was potty trained but don't push cause you're gonna have to buy a liner for his mattress or he'll have too many accidents on his bed. Trust me, he'll know when he's ready. It took me two days to potty train him and he was only two years old.
