Ohhhh, that's horrible, I'm sorry to hear that!

I'm assuming that you're just visiting Hawaii since you have a California driver's license, please forgive me if that's an incorrect assumption.

If you lose your California driver's license, you can wait until you get back to Cali to apply for a replacement. But the first thing you should do is to file a police report. Both the TSA and airline security representatives recommend that you do this to establish a paper trail to pinpoint the time and place of the theft.

Airlines handle lost IDs on a case-by-case basis, and several combinations of conditions can get you back on board your return flight without a driver's license. But you will for sure have to show up at the airport early to pass through a security interview.

According to Fodor's, showing the second half of a round-trip flight to Hawaii might be good enough proof to some airlines that you are who you say you are. Having other travelers with you who can substantiate your identity also helps. Credit card purchases can also be traced by your airline, to reinforce your identity claim, if need be (if you purchased your ticket using a credit card). Credit cards, library cards, business cards, etc. can help prove your identity if you still have those (if your whole wallet wasn't stolen).

I'm sorry, going to the Hawaii DMV won't help. They can't replace your California license, and you can't get a new Hawaii driver's license without some proof of your identity. Same with a state ID card. You need your birth certificate or passport to prove your identity before they'll issue you either, and you probably don't have either of those things with you. If you did, losing your CA-DL probably wouldn't be that much of a problem for you. And it takes a while to request and receive copies of those items from California. So I'd suggest (1) filing the police report, (2) calling your airline to talk about what you can do, and (3) arriving at the airport early to deal with it.

So sorry this happened to you! Hope this helps!
