Actually, we need good fences because we have annoying neighbors.

Does this translate into something like, the less you know, or something like the more privacy you have...If so I'd disagree, I lived up north and everyone had chain link 4 ft fences, you could talk to the neighbor 3 doors down and everyone knew everyone. I live down south and we all have 8 ft privacy fences and I don't know any of my neighbors...if we do see each other running to the car, most of the time we pretend not to see each other. I do it now too, I got tired of getting the cold shoulder and wondering if I had done something to offend them. I like the chain link "crappy" fence better.

Right now the US has one of those crappy invisible fences. It keeps us in, but it can't keep the illegals out, similar to the way it will keep your dog in your yard, but it won't keep the skunks (insert animal found in your area) out or away from your dog.
A real privacy fence will keep your dog protected from animals trying to get into your yard. It will also keep your animal from running loose and terrorizing the neighborhood.

I live out in the woods, and I believe that having no neighbors are good neighbors.

sometimes that is best if you have noisy neighbors although that will probally tick them off
