Yes, I have one currently and have had one before. They have both been purchased as new cars but Toyota's track record even for a used car has always been very good. You should really check out Consumer Reports so that you can compare and contrast whichever cars you like. Toyota's also retain their resale value pretty well too.
If safety is your primary concern I would lean towards Volvo, Subaru, or the newer Fords. They are all built very well and get high marks on safety each year. Volvo's biggest downfall is their bodies tend to rot out long before the car dies.
If overall engine reliability, gas usage is your primary concern then i would suggest Toyota or Nissan. Few American cars IMO can compare to these value for value.

Did you just come out of hibernation? Toyotas and Hondas are pretty much #1 for quality, and have been for probably 20 years.

I have had 2 each of honda and toyota and loved all 4 they were very reliable and had maintained good resale value. I have also had many so called american cars and none of them came close to Japanese guality or resale value.
