My name is Juniper, so I was thinking "Under the Juniper Tree" What do you think, or do you have a better idea?
What sort of things would you like to see a "New Age/Occult" shop have? Both in-store and online. I plan to have new, used, vintage and custom items ranging from robes and clothes to cauldrons and books and stuff from local artists and craftsmen. I want to be a little different from all the others and have a wider selection of inventory and prices.
Thanks!

Drop the "Under" and just call it The Juniper Tree.

Be sure to carry a wide variety of incense. I know, it's a small-value item, but I've known people who've had these shops and say that incense moves pretty quickly. Also carry a good range of Tarot cards, and maybe some nice rune kits. Have things that will appeal to practitioners from various traditions (Wicca, ceremonial magick, chaos magic, Vodoun, Asatru, Celtic, Egyptian, Santeria, New Age, etc). Sterling jewelry also moves well, but don't overprice it. Crystals and various gemstones would be good, too. Don't forget the nice-smelling ritual and anointing oils. Play nice, calming music in your store, and when people ask, "What is that fantastic music you're playing?", show them the CDs you've got for sale.

I like " under the juniper tree" and the only other name I could think of would be "juniper's blessings"--I mostly go to new age/occult shops for stones and herbs, but I always walk out with something else that just caught my eye--last time it was the peacock feathers--sounds like you have a great place--good luck! and blessed be!

We once had a shop nearby called "EarthSong Herbal" I loved that name. It's pretty.

I like it when stores have small coffee shop areas. One of our local shops took in donations of used books for people to read in their reading nook. I liked that idea but I suppose you could sell them too. Another had a small room in the back where you could make an appointment with a tatoo artist that specialized in pagan designs. Another one did custom-made jewelry. One had someone come in twice a year with the equiptment that could take a picture of your aura. That was fun and a good way to meet people. About twice a year we have another that puts on a gem show---they have someone come in who is popular in our area (Ken Harsh) who always has some of the best stones and information about stones. One store had beautiful ritual clothing but it was overpriced so while people admired it, they didn't buy it.
Several years back we had a store that went to a local shop that sold granite counter tops. They asked for the usable scrap and had it cut into 4" squares (they picked granite in colors to correspond with the four elements). They glued felt on the bottoms and were setting them up in a circle---I bought them all instantly, including a black slab that was 12"X4". I liked the fact that it was recycled, and I am sure they made good money on it. They're beautiful and I've found many uses for them.

I've named a lot of stores in my area but the fact is that there has been so many that have gone out of business. Part of the reason is because people here just don't need many things to practice their religion. If the stores had diversified and had a little larger customer base, they may have made it (your internet sales may take care of that). Daily, my husband and I use 3-5 sticks of incense and 2-4 tea candles. So good quality but inexpensive staples are important to us. I use pure sandlewood oil, so that has to be ordered anyway. Other than that we don't really use much. We like good history books about the Celts but few metaphysical shops carry those. We'd also like things that are reproductions, but again that's hard to find.
Good luck and many blessings for your new business!

Oh PLEASE have more occult stuff. You have no clue how hard a lot of these things are to find--and I'm not talking out-of-print books, I'm talking your basic Crowley texts and Blavatsky and Fortune and Carroll and Hine. I saw a site not long ago with some different posters of the Tree of Life (a standard Tree, a Tree with Tarot affiliations on it, a Tree with the colors of the Sephira, etc.) which I'd love to have. Lots of essential oils. I have no problem with New Age/Wiccan stuff--it's just very difficult to find what I like to use. (This site-- http://www.alchemy-works.com/ --has a lot of very unique incenses and oils, more occult-y than pagan; it's a good example of some of what I'd love to see in more stores.)

i would like to see historic books and new age books seperated. and with a reference guide to the authors of said books.

bulk herbs and insence are always nice.

a variety of ritual tools and items from very cheep to very expensive.

stones and crystals. both finished and un-finished.

stone and crystal quick reference guides.

jewlery in silver, and copper. with ring sizes above 15..because my pinky finger is a 13 and i like to wear 4 finger rings.

as to what i would call it, make the name stand out for what it is . that ay folks will be able to find you.

anything that mentiones mythical figures or ancient symbols will draw folks in.

anything that incorperates the words Magick or mystical.

maybe "Under the Mystical Juniper Tree"
this incorperates your name plus makes it evident that it is a new age shopp.

the name that i use for my craft booth is .
Ye Friendly Pagan Supply Shoppe"

good luck.

I really think Under the Juniper Tree is perfect.

You should try to offer CD's with inspirational music and incense and stuff like that too.

As most of your costumers will most likely be female . how about under the Juno tree. or the Juno/Jupiter tree.if not already patented.
Being different will be a bit difficult to do as most practitioners use the same materials.Harder to find items at a reasonable price would be nice.
be careful as like the one I used to go to. The owner started to have to carry black magic items to stay in business. that didn't make him quite it was the violence in the neighborhood that drove him out of the business.

Mystical Cauldrons and Robes? Interesting. "Under the Juniper Tree" could work but I'll throw about a couple more. Simply "Juniper" "Earthworks" "Earth Age" "Earth Source" "Conscious Creations" Never mind...I'm not feeling it. Sorry.
