I was messing about with the controls trying to improve recording quality and multiple inputs and then when I tried to record again it didn't work. What could I have clicked that stopped it recording any sounds?

Best advice is to go to control panel, clicking system in the classic view, then the device manager button. Just find the audio device that is not working and try to troubleshoot it.

if its a setting you've altered the you can reset your computer by using system restore and roll your settings back to an earlier date.
Start>>all programs>>accessories>>system tools>>system restore
