I'd like to volunteer 1 or 2 weeknights/weekend days per week. I appreciate any and all ideas. Thanks in advance.

The most important thing is volunteer for something you're interested in - that way, you'll stick with it.

Animal shelters
Political signature gathering
Homeless shelters
Library literacy programs
Big brothers/Big sisters
Pick up trash at your local beach/park

Try meetup.com for others who may volunteer near you.
Call your city hall for a list of community services

It really depends on where you are from.

You can start by check with the Red Cross Society, Salvation Army or YMCA / YWCA. Furthermore, you can check with the religious organizations in your area (e.g. Church, Temple or mosque). However, when approaching religious organization, be sure to approach the reputable ones.

If you are in Singapore, try approaching the Community Clubs for community out reach programs.

Cheers.

Also consider spending some time at a senior citizens center. There are many lonely people who would love to have someone to talk to.

A local humane society or animal shelter. Helping an animal in need find a new home is awesome. I rescued my dog from an abusive home through an animal shelter.
