Our 5-month-old cat, who was a stray, jumps on and 'attacks' our older 7-year-old cat. We don't know if the kitten just wants to play or not, but the older cat doesn't like it. He is normally very friendly and loving, but he is indifferent to us now. The kitten bites us and the older cat, either as play or just being mean, or teething. We've had him for about 4 months, and he hasn't changed his behavior much. We spray him with water, put him in time out, etc. when he misbehaves, but nothing seems to help. What can we do to get him to stop biting, and what can we do to help our older cat to be normal again? Thanks.

The older one is ticked off you got another cat, he will get used to him and might even start caring for him. The kitten might need some kitten therapy with another kitten his age. I tried this with a biter kitten I had-- nothing helped, he'd attack my ankles, etc. When he had to spend 2 days with another biter kitten, they both figured out that biting hurts and they both stopped! He just doesn't know.

good luck!

Is kitten play, and the older one is peeved that you have another little ratbag of a kitten (smiling cos meant in fun) that is a pain in the butt

Has your little one been desexed as yet? If not, may be an idea to do that. For him biting you, grab him by the scruff of the neck (is what mum does) and say no and put him down and away from you. Even in a different room.

It is also a good idea to put the kitten in a different room/cat enclosure for a while so the older cat can have some alone time with you.

I have introduced young animals into a house of older animals a number of times, both cats and dogs and have found this has worked well. But if the young ones isn't de-sexed, get it done asap, that will calm the little one down a little bit (at least)

Good luck with it

Your older cat used to be top cat; now he has a young upstart to deal with. He probably sees you as being a little responsible for this, but after a while, and with plenty of attention and affection from you, he will see that he is still part of the family and loved. As for your younger cat's attacks - kittens learn self defense from playing with other cats; since there are no other kittens in your family, he's trying to engage your older cat in play. By the time your kitten is a year old or so, this will slow down considerably; until then, your older cat will let Junior know if he gets out of line! Let them work out their own pecking order, and in time I think you will see that they get along very well.

Sounds like ur 7 yr old might b a little jeolous, make sure u give him/her lots of attention. He probly thinks that u r trying to replace him. They have a tendency to do that. And and far as ur kitten goes, he's just trying to play. This very thing has happened to me recently, we just make sure that all our cats r plenty loved, that way there r no hard feelings. Ur older cat will sulk for a while, BUT it WILL get better. Trust me. Good luck, and have fun with ur new little one.

Awww...that is so hard when you love the cat you have had for a long time but it will get better. We have a 6 year old female (De-Ja) and then we found this little 6 week old male barn cat (got him his shots and all) we named him Slug since he likes to reach out his arm and SLUG you as you walk by. She hated him for the longest time, oh God it was terrible for a while she hated me and everyone else on earth. But I am happy to say De-Ja and Slug are the bestest of friends now. They absoutley love each other, follow each other all over the place, they sleep together they even ignore us together now. It will work out just be patient once the older cat realizes the younger one is not leaving they will manage. Good Luck.

try bitter apple spray to discourage the biting, either put it on your skin or put a little squirt in it's mouth when it bites.

Your older cat is most likely jealous, feeling replaced. Give him more one on one time, lock the other cat in a different room if necessary while doing this.
