Legal in the USA. And I think that it should be. Children have no right to privacy where their safety or the safety of other children are concerned. I don't know if it was legal to do it in front of other kids, but they do have the right. And no they don;t have to get permission from the police. Its the other way around. If the police want to just come into a school and go through lockers... purses etc, they need a warrant, or permission from the school... like an invitation from the Principal.
Very telling that you say you denied it, but you don't tell us that you or your friends weren't responsible. Also very telling that you don't say what happened. They just don't rifle through kids bags randomly (although they should), they do it when they suspect something. It isn't usually the 4.0 kids that aren't ever in trouble and have a healthy well adjusted and positive school attitude that they suspect and search when something happens. Take this as a warning sign. You can turn your life around and do something with yourself... or you can end up working nights at a gas station. Its your choice. But at least stop interfering with other students ability to learn and get an education... they will be your boss someday, you don't want to make them hate you now and retaliate later in life do you?
Grandmaster B - "TELL HIM IF HE HAS A WARRANT and its not legal " Your syntax is as good as your advice. You "ask" a question, you don't "tell" a question. They don't need a warrant... nor do they have the ability to get one. Hmmm.... I think that you are going to end up with a job with your name on your shirt.

Read your student handbook. In many schools across America, any principal or instructor can go through your personal property that is on campus as long as you are present. Sorry but he had the right to go through your things especially if he had a suspicion. They just can't go through whatever they want they do need probable cause. Most of the time they will have a police officer standing there or even a school security guard along with you and your parents.

Hey, RDNZL. Your wrong about schools searching a student vehicle. Schools do not have the right to search through your car no matter what the reason, or suspicion. The school can have the police come down and search the car though. The police also need probable cause to search the vehicle when they come down. Most likely the police will use the schools suspicion as probable cause though.
What you might be thinking of though, is a little loophole schools use to search vehicles on their property. Most schools if not all of them require students to get a parking permit to park their cars on school property. One of the requirements is that the students give the school permission to search their vehicles. Thus no police needed, no warrant needed, no need to ask the student anything except where they parked.

A school official has a right and a duty to search anything on school property that he/she considers suspicious.
Imagine a kid bringing a gun onto campus. He has it in his backpack, but it has been made illegal to search him. Waiting for the police to come and do a search could have fatal consequences.
Don't you feel a little bit safer knowing that school officials have the right to conduct searches when they have a suspicion that something isn't right?
