If you were going to guess an estimate of how much it would cost to live in LA per month (including rent for an apartment around $1500), how much would you say?

$5000 seems really high to me, but it all depends on where you live and what you do. $1500 will get you a studio apartment by the beach, but if you look in the valley there's some really nice two bedroom apartments or houses in Sherman Oaks or Burbank (I work in Burbank and the commute from Santa Monica killed me after a while).

If you like to go out a lot... it's hard to find a good meal for under $15, and it's not uncommon to find a basic bar drink for $10+.

With that said... my expenses are easily under $2000/month - I share a 2 bedroom apartment (most 2 BR are 2 bathroom), and I've made friends with a lot of people who can hook me up... the other great thing about LA (especially working in entertainment :)

As a rule, L.A. is more expensive than Chicago and Houston... but slightly less expensive than New York and San Francisco.

Part of the problem is certain people in L.A. are show-offs, and they spend more than they make or build up a ton of credit card debt. You certainly CAN live in L.A. for less than $5000 a month (to bring in that much after taxes, you'd have to make at least 100K a year, and I can guarantee that the vast majority of the population do not make more than that).

Millions of Angelenos live just fine with far less, in fact.

$1500 will get you a decent studio or one-bedroom apartment in a nice part of L.A. (Westside, Pasadena, etc).

I'd say to live comfortably, you'd need at least as much you spend on rent for food, gas, and other middle-class luxuries (like going to the movies every week, going out to eat at least a couple nights a week, and getting new tech toys). So I'd say $3000 a month at a minimum.

$1500 will get you a small apartment in a nice area.

Food and entertainment, it depends on your taste...Denny's or Napa Valley Grill? Whole Foods or Food for Less?

Gas: What do you drive (and you MUST drive) and how far do you commute?

Utilities are easy, no heating and air.

Say, an even and comfortable $5000 per month.
