The Loreal Sublime glow, does work really good, especially for a drugstore brand. Of the drugstore brands I think the smell is least obnoxious.I don't know if these suggestions will help you, but they are worth trying anyway.
I find it most noticable on the day of application. After it dries apply a good smelling lotion (I love Philosophy's Amazing Grace). Usually you will be the only one who will notice it, so I don't know if I'd worry too much.
Try using the medium shade, then hopefully you will get enough color that you will not feel you need to apply it daily. You wont notice the smell after your next days shower.
You could also try splurging on XenTan, you can get this at Nordstrom or online. I does really work well and during application it smells great. Once the tan develops that "tan smell" is only very faint.
(By the way, in response to the other answer. Tanning bed tans smell the worst. All tans whether from the sun or bed or jar will have a "smell". I am a former user of all methods of tanning. From the jar is the best, because the skin stays healthy, taught and keeps it natural glow. So it looks very youthful and good. Sun or bed tans tend to dull the skin, make it appear "thicker" or "older" even if you are young.
*If you really need a deeper color on your legs for some occasion, increase the color by using a bronzer, instead of using more self tanner. It will perfect the color and give totally flawless, smooth results. Bonus: temporary, so no worries with applying. However, that makes it also something that you wouldn't want to rely on for everyday. Experiment with different brands to find one that works to your liking. I've used several different brands (talking the more pricey brands here) and I have a little drug store secret for you. Almay. They make this stuff called "bare-it all legs" in a small 3 oz spray can. (Go for the warm or the golden shade.) I saw it at an Ulta store and tried it on a whim. I figured I was throwing out 8 bucks because I tried the Sally Hansen spray can stuff, hated it, but what the heck I'm a cosmetic product testing junkie. It is for the legs only. You spray it in your hands and rub it into your legs. Let it dry and it gives a matte finish that is very smooth and covers any imperfections such as self tanning accidental streaks or occasional red bumps from razor, etc. Then what I like to do, once it is totally dry I use a little lotion that has some sparkle to it and rub that over it for a really nice, natural looking sheen. It looks awesome. I promise. Cheapest way to go. I think it is just as good as several of the high end brands I have tried, and even better than most of them.

I haven't tried that brand. What I think works best on pale skin is to use one of the body lotions with gradual self-tanner in them. They add color lightly which builds each day that you use it. If you use one of those every day for about a week and then every 2 or three days after that you will get a really natural looking light tan.

Well if it smells then that may be a major problem, so try to find another one that works just as well without the aweful smell. I like neutragena products. A good tip when applying a self tanner is mix in some moisterizer, it makes the tanner go on more easily.

Sorry but there is nothing you really can do. That smell is the chemical and your dead skin cells interacting to produce the color. I try to put it on in the evening. That way when I wake up the next day and shower it doesn't have a smell. I tried before bed and it ends up on my sheets. Whatever you do don't go to a tanner. That is really bad for your skin and will give you wrinkles.

This is the disadvadvantage of them. They leave an odor behind. I find the smell lasts a few days, if I want to be tanned for the weekend, I apply on on Wed or Thurs and have a few good baths with lots of nice smelling products. Aveda Sun Source is a good one, it doesn't smell too bad. It is more money though.
