After really thinking it through I decided to keep my last name Of Hammond. The reason I chose not to take my husband's is because I think it's terribly ugly and we are not even a part of the Skelton family. I plan to have children soon, it is wrong for the children to take my name instead of his?

We are not apart of the Skelton family because his father never was apart of his life and he has no connections to any other skeltons

These are decisions that need to be made between you and your husband!
My wife hyphenated her name when we were married, now she seldom uses the hyphenated version and kids have my last name.
PS you have a lot more to do with the Skelton family- that is you!

Most women I know who keep their maiden names end up changing it to their husband's name anyway. Personally, I think the children should have their father's last name. This is a tradition handed down from generation to generation since forever. They are his children too. Why isn't he a part of the "Skelton" family. Is that not his real last name? I don't understand.

Take his name as a sign that you are a part of him now and dont confuse the kids.

Just because you dont think its pretty is not a reason to look excluded. And you will not be Mrs Hammond. You will be MS. Hammond and Mrs Skelton anyway.

People will not even know you are married

this is something that should have been discussed when the child was born not three years later. since it was not done when he was born you will have to respect her wishes. In most states a child will have the mothers maiden name if the parents were not married and the father never requested the child have his last name. she may be wondering why now he wants this son to take his last name but didn't bother when the child was born.

I think you should give them his last name. He is the father children are supposed to have the fathers last name and there is nothing wrong with the name Skelton

I think typically, esp if you are married, the kids get the father's last name...not sure if you can choose what you want them to have or not...

...but I've never heard of anyone not taking their husand's name because the didn't like it...Skelton isn't horrid at all...

What have your ancestors done? I think taking his last name or keeping your own is a cultural issue and not social. Who cares what society as a whole allows for? My culture would frown upon what you are doing, whereas other cultures may have other ways when it comes to names. It seems shallow to make the decision based on the fact that you think his last name is ugly. Follow your heritage.

personally i don't think that it is wrong but have you and your husband sat down and really talked about this issue. this is a decision that the both of you have to make. I am not married but i did give my child the fathers last name. but that was after i talked with him and we decided together.

let them have the same last name like you because for generation a women and her children have to take after the man side. Do something new and let him take your name. Because if he really love you he will take your maiden name.

Definitely give them the father's name. Your reason for not taking your husbands last name is your business, don't make the children suffer.
