Police Associtations are more like police unions or fraternal organizations. They seek to raise money to help fund law enforcement officiers with better equipment.
Police Associations are not a law enforcement agencies like police departments. They just seek money to make work easier for the cops. They will help with medical expenses when police officers are injured or sick and so on.

A police association is not necessarily associated with a police department at all. It can be a type of fraternal organization that the officers belong to that helps them as a group deal with issues within and outside the department they work for--sort of like a union. They often assist the family of officers killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.
It can also be an organization of officers who have banded together to accomplish things for the betterment of their community, such as assisting the needy, cleaning up or rebuilding a public facility, such as a park for underpriviledged children. I once belonged to the Fraternal Order of Police. Each year at Thanksgiving, we put together baskets of food, including turkeys, hams, potatoes, pies, cakes, etc., that we distributed to families that would otherwise not have a Thanksgiving dinner. We would often distribute 500 or more each year.
But, there are lots of different kinds of Police Associations. Often, some solicit funds by making phone calls to private citizens. I would at least want to do a little background into these organizations before making a donation. Some spend a lot on "administrative" or "overhead expenses" and give little actual support to the officers they are set up to assist.
Just do your homework. There are some good ones and some not so good ones.

No the police assocation is more like the police "union" or group that the police belong to. Amost every state has one. I was part of the PPA myself. It has retirement benifits and lobbies for officers rights. They also furnish an officer an attorney for departmental legal affairs.
Many so called associations are fake fraud groups that call peoples homes asking for donations. The real police department and assciations do not do this.
There is also a state and national police chiefs association, which is as it says a association for police chiefs.
But the police will have a office, a station, a substation, and other names.
