I am not a professional ear piercer yet I have pierced many a ear in my day. My own included. This is my method.

Have on hand:
Ice cubes
cotton balls
lighter for sterilizing
Rubbing alcohol
small container
several clean paper towels
stud earring w/ backing
safety pin for piercing

Here is what you do step by step:

Gather all supplies listed above in one place.

WASH YOUR HANDS WITH HOT WATER AND SOAP for at least a minute.

Sterilize: Safety pin for piercing - sterilize a needle using a flame. Hold the flame to the needle for a minute or two. Let it cool. Hold the non needle end of the safety pin while cleaning the needle with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. Be sure not to contaminate the needle once sterlile, place on clean paper towel. Do not touch the needle part with your fingers or it will be contaminated and your ear could become infected.
Sterilize the earring and backing by placing it in a small container with the rubbing alcohol for a minute or two. Without touching post to earring, place earring and backing on clean, dry paper towel. You can simply pour off extra alcohol from container and then tip the container with your earring/backing onto paper towel without touching the earring.

Numb your ear with ice cubes. Hold an ice cubes on the front of the lobe and back wrapped in a clean paper towel until it is *totally* numb...i'm talking somewhat frozen. A good 10 minutes or so.

Take a deep breath. Pierce your ear using the clean, sterilized needle in the desired spot by pushing the needle through your ear lobe. Release your breath. Pause for a minute or so, but not too much longer because you want your ear to remain numb while you remove the piercing needle and replace it with the stud. Take another breath and slowly but steadily, remove the piercing needle, immediately pick up the earring by the stud part and not the post (remember not to contaminate) and place in newly periced hole. Place backing on earring.

When your ear warms up it will throb and bleed a bit. NORMAL. Tiwst earring daily and clean back and front with q-tips and alcohol. If any signs of infection occur, remove earring and clean earlobe thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide. Healing time is 6-8 weeks.
Good luck and remember I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL!

Oh, don't DO that. You are not going to believe how much an ear can bleed, if it's done wrong! Claires does it for like 5 or 10 bucks at the mall, and there are probably other stores, too, if you don't have a Claires. It's also almost impossible for people to get the pierce centered well by themselves.

I would recommend going to a tattoo/piercing studio.. it is the safest and most professional... piercing with a gun hurts more and can cause damage and anyone can do it(no license or real training required)

And you can not sue the piercers if you get infected because they have you sign paperwork that says you have to care for the piercings yourself... most infections are due to lack of aftercare not operator error in a shop...

Go to the beauty supply, they sell the guns. Or do it the old fashioned way, ice and a straight pin or a starter ear ring. You know the ones they use to pierce your ears.

I wouldn't to be honest... a lot of my friends did that when they were younger and got infections and it's hard to get it in the right spot so it turns out looking like um well, you did it yourself. =) Just go down and get it done... it's super cheap and they usually throw in the jewelry for free anyways!

*sigh* You don't. You let a reputable piercer do it. That's why they get paid - they know what they are doing. If YOU do it, you could hit nerves, blood vessels and other things. I'm betting you don't have a personal autoclave for sterilizing your equipment either. Leave it to the professionals please.

i think it might be better if you went to the mall and do it. because its more professional and you dont want to get your ears infected.

it's not a big deal.
some numb the area w/ice first.
place something solid behind your lobe (like a potato)
use a clean needle

other suggestions....
