First stop calling them "pit bulls" Call them by their correct breed name: Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. Breeds are slightly different but both are called 'pits' by the unknowledgeable.
They are AKC breeds. In the original Walt Disney movie "The Long Journey Home" with live animal actors, the one star dog was a Staffie. So was the dog in the 1930s movies of the "The Little Rascals" called the Our Gang comedies. So was the dog on the original label for Philco Electronics and stereos.
Here is the link to the breed club for SBT:

Here is the link for AST breed club:
http://www.amstaff.org/
They has tons of information about the breeds
They both have a breeder's directory:
SBT:

AST:

I counted 5 SBT and 1 AST in Maryland without checking adjoining states.
Now we are not talking about your backyard breed dogs from who knows what kind of health and temperment background whose breeder could care less about the family history or all the hereditary health problems or whether their dogs 1/2borther went nuts and attacked someone or was untrainable - they just want to sell a puppy NOW
These are serious breeders dedicated to producing sound healthy and tempermentally reliable and trainable dogs.
Here is the link to the national breed rescue run by the clubs.
If you don't see a dog on the website, contact them anyhow, Not all dogs are up on the web and they may have one in your area.
SBT

AST - it has an email contact for national rescue

A good responsible reliable breeder will sand behind their dogs with a wrotten contract and contine to offer your advice and help with your dog.
If you find the right breeder but would have to wait for puppies, give your boyfriend a card with a note of contract for a puppy.
By the way, considering the bad press this breed has received, both rescue and a responsible breeder will interview you extensively before they place a dog or puppy.

pitbulls are illegal in a lot of places. Check to see if they are there, since you cannot find one.
