Can I only choose godparents for my baby if I am going to baptise her to be Catholic? I am not sure if that is what I am going to do. I am Catholic but my boyfriend (the dad) isn't he is Nazerath *not sure on spelling*. If i decided to baptise her at my boyfriends church can she not have godparents? i know that if i baptise her to my Catholic church she will have god parents but what if we decide to baptise her to a Nazerath Church? I'm very confused.

No you dont, my sister is not a catholic, so instead of making me a godparent, i have been made a 'life mentor', you will find different religions have different names but all will be the person appointed to care for the child of anything should happen.

A godparent, in some denominations of Christianity, is someone who sponsors a child's baptism. A male godparent is a godfather and a female godparent is a godmother. The child is a godchild.

At a Roman Catholic Baptism, there is always a Godparent or Godparents present if possible. A Godparent is much like a patron saint on earth, who prays for the newly baptised, looks after them spiritually and gives them guidance. The Catholic Church sees Baptism as an entry into the Kingdom of God, and entry into the Church. It is not something which is just between the person and God, but a whole-Church event wherein the Holy Spirit dwells.

Traditionally, the godparents were counted informally responsible for ensuring that the child's religious education was carried out, and for caring for the child should he/she be orphaned. Today the latter duty is the most commonly recognized duty of a godparent, and the word "godparent" often no longer has religious overtones. The modern definition of godparent is an individual chosen by the parents to take a vested interest in raising a more complete human being. However, godparent is not a legal position, and should the parents seriously intend the godparents to act as foster parents in case of their death, this must be legally specified through the usual means (such as a will).

A godparent may be related to the child, such as an uncle or an aunt, or may simply be a friend of the family. Usually someone very close to the family is chosen; in some cultures, the word for "godparent of one's child" is used for any, or certain, very close friends. This is the meaning of the Spanish compadre and comadre, the French commère and compère, and the archaic meaning of the English word gossip (from godsib, "god-sibling").

At least in the Anglican church, prospective godparents must be at least christened before they can take on this responsibility. The Roman Catholic Church also requires that the godparents have undergone Confirmation. In the US, a non Roman Catholic cannot become a godparent but is technically known as a Christian Witness.

All Christian churches have Godparents for baptisims. But Catholic churches require the Godparents to be Catholic in good standing...not sure what other's require. You will have to check with the pastor at whichever church you decide to have the baby baptized at.

You can only have god parents in the catholic church if all god parents and parents are catholic. We were not able to have our child baptised because while my husband is catholic, I am not.

I don't know about your boyfriend's religion. I do know that you can custom make any ceremony you wish to celebrate the birth of the baby and choose God Parents. For catholics it is a sacrament so it is recorded and important - but for many other faiths it is just a formal welcome to the world.

I can send you what we used if you send me your email address. It was not 100% christian symbolism, since I am not christian - but you can find some christian (including catholic) baptism online and go from there (either do it yourselves word for word or modify it to suit your family).

Peace!

Call the church. My cousin got baptized but she is only Christian not Catholic. I am her God mother and I am Catholic. It really all depends.

But you should talk to some people at your boyfriends church. A lot of people should know.
