I recently acquired my daughter's cat, and he also is a night-time prowler and mayhem-maker! (cats are naturally nocturnal so being awake when the rest of us are sleeping is perfectly normal.) One of his favorite ways to get my attention is to get up on the dresser, reach as far as he can up the wall, and scratch down pictures, posters, etc. VERY irritating! I have found one strategy that seems to be curbing this activity: When his antics wake me up, I holler NO at him, then get out of bed, pick him up, and put him in the carrier in another room. I do not spank him or anything like that. I just shut him in the box and go back to bed. He meows for a bit but soon realizes he's stuck there til morning. I think that he is making the connection that tearing up my house is NOT getting him the attention he wants, but rather a negative reaction, because the behavior is occuring less and less.

He is lonely and wants your attention. He has no concept of having to get up early and go work. This is typical cat behavior for when you're not focused on him. Currently, my baby is trying to tear down the window blinds because I'm on the computer and not playing with her! The only way to deal with this is to close the door. If he meows, put him in a room and close him up. Cats are VERY stubborn.

You have to train your cat. What I did is whenever my cat meowed at my door I got up and sprayed her with water... after 3 almost sleepless nights she stopped meowing. Now 3 years later she will come into my room and curl up in a ball at my feet and go to sleep. Both of my cats have the same sleeping hours as me and it works perfectly. You have to have a little perseverance but it's worth it.

I had a cat like that once. Most destructive creature I ever ran across. Turned out, he was lonely.

When we brought a second cat home, a female kitten, he mellowed out almost before our eyes. He instantly assumed the role of big brother and even mentored her in various "cat" activities (most notably, how to howl loud enough to be heard from the second floor to the basement).

Shut the door. He'll only meow for awhile and not for many days.

Welcome to "Nightime Crazies"! cats are nocturnal and are usually very active at night. It seems to me that he is trying everything to wake you up and play with him. Try setting aside 20 minutes just before you go to sleep to give him attention with some gentle play. Cats eventually get used your routine and after some time, if you are consisitent, will get the message and calm down at night.

My 14 year-old cat does the same thing. I know she doesn't mean to, but cats don't care if they knock stuff down-- it's not their problem. The best you can do is try to keep your nightstand clear of stuff for him to knock down, especially something breakable.

Train that cat to stay in the pet carrier at night. or the laundry room . You need your rest and Kitty needs to learn to respect your home!
