stay awake forever

I had dreams wherein I can control my actions but not the settings of the dreams.

When you are dreaming and in your dreams you can't do anything, like you are swimming and someone is after you and no matter how hard you swim you're just not moving. Just relax and internalize the fact that it is a dream and you can do whatever you wanted to do. Think of yourself as superman go and fly away. This will trigger that you are concious and you will wake up in a few seconds.

There are a million books on "directed dreaming". I haven't found any of the methods reliable. But sometimes, if I can achieve a light trance state just before bed by repeating a broad topic (like flying or outer space) my dreams will be about the desired topic.

This is what I heard, but nobody will stay awake that long. Have someone watch you sleep. Tell them, when my eyes move back and forth really fast, thats when I'm dreaming. (REM). Tell the person to poke your finger with a needle slightly. I read that when the person pokes your finger, you should have control of what your dreaming. How? Why? E-mail me if it works.

there is no way of controlling your dreams. dreams are controlled by the autonomic (or involuntary) control center of the brain. just like you cannot willfully force your heat to beat faster, you cannot contol your dreams.
