My boyfriend's dog is four years old. We are moving in together and I would like the dog to be allowed in the house. Unfortunately, our future roommates have a house cat. The dog has never been socialized, doesn't like other dogs and tries to get cats when we go for walks. He is a nice dog, extremely cute and great with children. He just wasn't socialized/trained to get along with other animals. Has anybody had this experience? Have you been successful introducing an older dog to other animals, especially a cat, and having them become friends, or at least, not kill each other? Let me know if you have and what you did to accomplish it. Thanks.

If it matters, he's an American Eskimo dog and weighs about 24 pounds.

yes it is possible to house train an adult dog, but it does require alot of patience and you should not let the two of them interact with each other, until you have introduced them..,, place the cat in a cat carrier and let the dog into the room, you should keep the dog on a leash remember at all times that dogs are sensitive to how you are handling them if you pull the leash tight and have tension on the leash they sense this and it could make them act aggressive when otherwise they would not. also another tip would be to never let any meeting between them get overly aggressive. if it's negative interaction that is a bad thing, Has the cat been around dogs before? the best thing to do is keep the cat in its own space and dont rush the issue.... sometimes it could take a while, and the important thing if the dog tries to chase cats what would he do you think if he was able to actually catch one that's the most important thing.... sometimes its a playful if you run i will chase you but then loose interest if the cat stops... also remember that the cat will most likely be hissing and growling that is okay as long as neither one is trying to kill the other one they will eventually be able to co exist in the same house. also remember that it's patience and the first meetings you do where the cat is loose in the room, you should have the dog on a leash... good luck

Okay -- he wants to chase cats. Not good if you wnat a lampto remain up right.

First, take him to a puppy/basic obedience class. You are going to ahve to be able to enforce NO.

Second, leave a 6 ft leash on him around the house. WHen he goes for the cat, jump on the leash, haul him as you roar NO BAD in a deep voice. Get in next to him, lean over him - almost making him back up frm the direction he was headed if he hasn't hit the ground and scold (in that same voice) NO NO Don't you do that now get back there - and make him move backwards and away from the cat (or its path) by being in front og him and stepping into him

Third, do not leave them unsupervised until he is more respectful of the cat. Crate him if you have to.

Yes I had a bishon who was about 6 when a stray cat showed up and my daughter just had to bring it in. At first our dog barked at it and tried playing with her sometimes a little too rough and Sabrina (the cat) tapped her on the nose with her paws a couple of times and our dog settled down and they coexisted nicely the rest of there lives. They are both gone now but it did work out OK. I would just try putting them together and let kitty protect herself but watch them so neither one hurts the other.
Good luck

This is a case of "remedial socialization" and behavior modification. Socialization for dogs closes at about 4 months of age. If it wasn't socialized or properly socialized then most dogs develop social deficits and reactivity.

Seek professional help by a qualified trainer.

I teach a specialized class for reactive dogs.

Volunteer at the ASPCA/SPCA in your city, they often have classes in socializing dogs, perhaps even older ones. Call them and ask.

Yes, all you need to do is take treats wherever you might go with cats and each time he jumps or pulls give him the command "leave it" show him the treat and get him to sit. good luck
