It's kind of an age old question isn't it? There is a lot of factors. Society would have to be the main reason. Then you have telivision, magazines, they portray this imagne that unless you are very skinny you are not worth living and functioning in society. Take the fashion models for instance! Then you have every diet product and weight loss company flogging their product and they say if you aren't skinny then your nothing. Just because somebody is carrying excess weight doesn't mean they are any less a human being then the next person. It doesn't mean they are lazy etc they could just have a medical condition. Larger people still feel and think the same as anyone else. People are too quick to judge instead of getting to know a person.

Since we were little kids, we've been conditioned to associate fat or unattractive people with evil. Don't believe me? Go watch some Disney movies! Or any cartoons! The villains are always fat or ugly. Just last night I watched the first ninja turtles episode from the 80's and I couldn't believe how exaggerated April was!! Her boobs were bigger than her head! Her waist was as small as her neck, and she basically had the face of a 5 year old...
And a woman working for the bad guys had dark hair, a large nose, and a flat chest...Way to teach little kids which sorts of women are good and bad! April didn't need to have the body of a porn star for little boys to like her, that was some nerdy cartoonist's fantasy...

It is awful that people have to mistreat or make fun of fat people. Im sure everybody has overweight people in their family. How would those people feel if someone mistreated one of their family members because of their weight. People are just cruel these days, everyone has flaws! They must be insecure with their self! Ive always believed beauty is skin deep!!!

Old prejudice.
When tribes first formed, and if a man or woman was overwieght, it would signify their taking more than their share of food, and doing less than their share of work. Thus, it kinda pissed off the other people in the community, feeling as if they were shorted.
Another idea is derived from Greece and the emperor's thereof. Their lavish lifestyle, gave them no need for work, as they were able to have servants. Less work, more eating meant big bodies. A large body was the epitomy of beauty and wealth. People still have a distain for those who are visibly more wealthy than they are.
In recent times, being overwieght is seriously unhealthy. The correlation comes from something unhealthy could be contagious. It's far reaching, but the primal thinking here is split second, and that's why we judge so. Being unhealthy is so undesireable, we feel the need to shame the obese as if they had aids (another disorder of the body which we judge people by).

why do we mistreat ourselves! is there such a thing as mistreatment
each living thing treats the world around it in a certain way AND
there is an impact to treating ourselves and others the way we do
is it mistreatment? i would say no
but there is an impact - and do we want to be responsible for that impact...for the cost of such treatment!
how we treat ourselves and each other gives us the world we have to day! And how is that going for us all!
I think it is not useful to pick out one group that is being treated a certain way - it implies that others are not being treated in that same way - and frankly we are treating all and everything quite badly!
Ourselves, natives, single mothers, gays, old people, children, blacks, handicapped, white people, immigrants - who is not taking thier turn getting f u c k e d over on this imcomplete list!

I AM FULL-FIGURE ALL OF MY LIFE...
One day I asked some guys on my job y guys don't like fat girls...
This is what they said..
When u r fat u have mistreated YOURSELF!! A guy doesn't want to deal w/ a "problem". When u r overweight it means "something is wrong".
"baggage". Get rid of the baggage...lose the weight....that's what I m trying to do. YOU will b better for it. It's not a BAD thing to be healthy & slim. :) think about it!
And a tip for guys: for some reason, women really don't care if a guy is fat...we don't think about that at all!! BUT we r turned off totally by "weak" guys.
Luv,
Shay

I believe that people mistreat other people to make themselves feel better. I believe that everyone has insecurities, even the so called "beautiful people". I believe that instead of tearing other people down to make ourselves feel better we should look for the good in them. Then we can take the good in them and in ourselves and build on the things we don't like about ourselves and help each other get over them.

I have to wonder the same thing.
I am overweight and at my last job, I was overlooked for a promotion (in spite of the fact that I was the most qualified and even have a degree in the field) for a younger skinnier girl. When I protested, they told me that I did not have a good attitude and they began to assign me even more tasks than everyone else.
It sucks, it really does but its just a fact of life. Its in what we watch on television, in what we read, what we hear on the radio, and even what we are shown since birth. My heart breaks at the fact that my appearance has more bearing on my success than my abilities, dedication, work ethic, etc.

When people have low self esteem they lash out an the easiest target they can find...which usually is larger people. In my school we have rock climbing where while ur partner is climbing u have to hold the rope. No one ever wants to hold the rope for my chubby friend. She never says so but I know it hurts her. After men comments she becomes on the offensive, sometimes lashing out at her friends. She is very nice, but don't take her seriously because she is not a size 1.

i use to wonder that. i hated people sayin ur fat because u chose to be. im not fat im honestly big bones u can count my ribs. but society believes that the perfect body is a size to. and kids and teens are worse to fat people because of how they are raised. if they are raised to think that fat people are ugly then they pick up on it. also its a sign of that person's immaturity and low self esteem. look at all the beautiful plus size models like mia tyler.
