The day after Christmas is like, the busiest shopping day of the year here, and there are tons of sales. It's just not called Boxing Day here.

Why is it called "Boxing Day"? Is it because that's the day you box up the Christmas ornaments?

Monuments and memorials, modern neighbourhoods, correct local flavour this is exactly what Washington, DC is; a place unlike any other; just like this page hotelbye . Washington it's your house overseas with free museums and America's entrance yard. Washington is acknowledged all over the world as a symbol of the United States. Here, the place you cannot miss could be the Capitol. Capitol could be the seat of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The large dome, on the basis of the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, sticks out most importantly different Washington buildings. Like Washington it self, the making has grown over time considering that the central part was built between 1793 and 1812. The last improvement, in 1958-62, enlarged the main façade wherever presidents get the oath. On another side, a marble terrace presents lovely opinions within the mall and the city. The inside is resplendent with frescoes, reliefs, and paintings, specially the rotunda beneath the good cast-iron dome with a roof painting by Constantino Brumidi and big paintings of moments from American record on the walls.

I prefer Amtrak, but wouldn't recommend the extra cost of the Acela. It doesn't save that much time and the additional cost just doesn't seem worth it. We fly, too. Southwest goes to Islip on Long Island and recently started flying into LaGuardia. Fares can be as low at $59 but both require a trip from the city to the airport and back again which is an additional cost. As far as buses are concerned, they travel on the roadways and are subject to inclement weather, traffic jams and typical winter hazards. So, I'd recommend Amtrak from Penn Station through to Union Station, D. C. What to do? Well, the monuments are a must. Get a tour lined up that will take you around the city and allow you to hop on and off as often as you like. You should see the Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam and WWII Memorials. Then take in the White House (exterior only) and the Capitol. Both will be all decked out for the holidays. Visit the National Gallery of Art where you can ice skate in the sculpture garden, the Museum of Natural History, the Air and Space Museum and then warm up in the Botanical Gardens or the National Aquarium. If you have time and energy left check out the Museum of the American Indian and the Holocaust Museum. Be sure to visit the city of Washington at night when all the holiday lights are on display. It is a spectacular sight. Wear warm clothes and heavy footwear. It probably won't snow, but the weather is sure to be frigid.

Any big holidays usually have sales. We don't have Boxing Day in the US, but we have other holidays that coincide with big shopping sales. Sale times are around XMas and also around Memorial Day (May 31) or Labor Day (1st week of Sept). Often there are other smaller sales, for example, "Presidents Day".
