From a Christian (and Catholic) point of view, if you are not "saved" then the inequality of sins does not matter. You cannot earn your way to heaven.

If you are "saved" then the inequality of sins does matter.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.

Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.

However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.

With love in Christ.

For the purposes of sending you to hell, yes sins are equal. Its like it doesnt matter if you drop a couple ounces of motor oil on your white dress shirt or a gallon. Either way it is messed up and needs to be cleaned by cleaner you dont have!

For practical purposes we all know there is a difference between sins and the sins that deny or insult God are the worst. Then the sins that destroy us and other people the most are 2nd worst.

"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." -Matthew 22:36-40

There are some that God hates more than others:

Many people fear a list of seven sins that God supposedly will not forgive. This list is known as the “seven deadly sins.” Is the idea of “seven deadly sins” Biblical? Yes and no. Proverbs 6:16-19 declares: “There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: (1) haughty eyes, (2) a lying tongue, (3) hands that shed innocent blood, (4) a heart that devises wicked schemes, (5) feet that are quick to rush into evil, (6) a false witness who pours out lies, and (7) a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.”

All sin is sin no matter how small or big but I don't think that all sin is necessarily equal. This can be shown by how God punished people in the Old Testament for grossly sinning against Him. Some things are certainly more offensive than others but just because some sins are big does not make the small ones ok.

The real point is that we have all sinned (even if we consider them to be small sins like white lies) and we all need to accept Jesus paid the price for our sins and repent or we will not be reconciled to God.

The bible says 'we are saved by grace, it is the gift of God so that no man can boast'. Biblically savlation from sin is a gift. Jesus paid the price because God knew that humans could not keep the law perfectly all their lives. The wages of sin is death and God paid the penalty for our sin on the cross. Don't let anyone tell you you can be saved by keeping the law - there has never been anyone who could keep the whole law perfectly their whole lives other than Jesus.

The rest of us need the help of Christ.

All sins are equal, except one. The reason most ppl believe that you will go to Hell for killing yourself is because you can't ask forgiveness for a sin not yet committed. And how can you ask forgiveness after the fact if you are dead? The only sin that is concidered the biggest of all is blastpheme (sp) of the Holy Ghost. (In which I read a lot of on Yanswers)

People say this because suicide is a sin and these people believe that if suicide, ones last act in this world, is a sin, and the person cannot repent and ask for forgiveness because they are "dead," the person is doomed to hell. I'm not saying I agree or don't agree with this but that is the rationale.

As far as all sin being equal, that's not scriptural. It does say that he who commits any one sin is guilty of committing them all, but it also says that there is one unforgiveable sin, blaspheming the Holy Ghost.

The "10 Commandments" are no longer in effect...

Ephesians 2:15 Through his body on the cross, Christ put an end to the law with all its commands and rules. He wanted to create one new group of people out of the two. He wanted to make peace between them.

Colossians 2:14 He wiped out the written Law with its rules. The Law was against us. It opposed us. He took it away and nailed it to the cross.

Galatians 2:16 ...No one can be made right with God by obeying the law.

Galatians 2:21 ...What if a person could become right with God by obeying the law? Then Christ died for nothing!

Galatians 5:4 Some of you are trying to be made right with God by obeying the law. You have been separated from Christ. You have fallen away from God’s grace... The ONLY verse that talks about falling from grace, and they did it by trying to follow the law!

Jesus said he didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. (Matt 5:17) The effect was the same. Once fulfilled it was no longer in effect. The very next verse, Matthew 5:18, looks forward to the time when the law would be set aside. "...Not even the smallest stroke of a pen will disappear from the Law UNTIL EVERYTHING IS COMPLETED."

On the cross, Jesus' last recorded saying, "It is finished," is an important milestone. Because of Jesus life, Satan had been defeated. The law was finished and would no longer stand between God and mankind.

The 10 commandments along with the rest of the law ("commands and rules" from Ephesians 2:15) were "set aside" when they were fulfilled or completed at Jesus' resurrection. We are no longer bound by that law.

I have many Christian relatives who vehemently profess that missing church one weekend a year is just as evil as raping children. Because of that belief, they covered up the crimes of someone they knew to be a child molester for years and allowed him to molest other young girls. When two of the girls finally spoke out, they were condemned and their relatives nearly all backed the criminal because of the Christian believe that only God can judge people and that therefore Christians should simply look the other way in the face of crime.

The belief that all sins are equal is extremely common and it is one of the greatest problems with Christianity.

Sin is sin, and James 2:10 says, " whoever sins in one area has broken the law and is guilty of all." The person who said if you kill yourself you will go to hell is wrong in his understanding of the Bible. Heaven or hell is not determined by if you sin, or how much you have sinned, or how terrible your sin is, but it is determined by your faith in Jesus Christ. If killing yourself meant you would go to hell that would mean most people on earth. We kill ourselves by our diets, the way we drive our cars, the activities we do. Most people who die, die because of wrong choices thay have made in life.

They are all equal. The bible says that' God is not a respecter of persons' which means He holds us all accountable at the very same level. It also says that if you have broken one commandment, then you have broken them all. God is merciful and just. He judges the heart of man. It isn't about whether you lie once or a thousand times, or whether you kill or dishonor your parents. It's about repenting and asking for forgiveness of sins and He offers that forgiveness through His Son Jesus, to everyone.....even the worst of sinners.
