What a ridiculous concept, showing receipts for expenses paid with child support! One wonders how this subject managed to come up. I bet there's a story there!

I note that several posts mention the possibility of child support going towards a custodial parent's drug habit and, as such, should be accounted for. I think it would be better to simply document THE ACTUAL DRUG USE and perhaps seek custody of the child rather than asking for an accounting of the child support. I think that might be more in line with the best interests of the child, don't you think?

My husband is an NCP and he's paid child support faithfully for 14 years and, while the animosity that exists between the two of them is the stuff of legends, he has never once questioned what his ex does with the child support. If his daughter announces that the family is taking a trip to AZ, I don't hear "so that's where this month's check went, huh?!" He's more likely to ask her to bring him back a tee shirt.

All too often, I think, NCPs think of their child support as a method of financing someone's lifestyle, and that's where a lot of the trouble begins. Far from financing anything, you're assuming responsibility for a life (or lives) that you helped create. Whether last month's child support check went towards Junior's braces, or Judy's new clothes, or the car that transports them safely back and forth to school, soccer and the junior high dance, it all benefits the kids. And, again, if an NCP doesn't feel that his children are being cared for properly (ie their clothes are ragged, they're clearly hungry or failing to thrive) then the children would be better benefited by prompt action to assume custody rather than asking for a full accounting of his child support.

Who among us parents could possibly find the time to keep those kind of records?!

Yes I receive child support for my oldest two children... No I don't think I should have to show receipts..

Each month when the child support check comes in it is placed in my husband and my joint account... the money in the account is used to pay for everything from our morgage to the odd $10-$20 a child needs for an activity...

My ex husband has never questioned where the money is spent... He knows the children are well cared for and knows the money goes into the family account to pay for everything...

If a chid is not being cared for there may need to be an accounting of where the funds are actually being spent, but if a child is being cared for there is no reason for an accounting just so the person paying the support feels they are in control of where thier money is going..

When the divorce or break up happened the need to account to the other person is gone... Any accounting that is ordered should be accounting to the courts not the other parent...

People who want an accounting of childsupport without having a mitigating circumstance have some severe control issues...

Yes I get childsupport and no I don't think that I should have to show receipts for what I spend it on. And I will tell you why.

When you add up the cost of food that my son eats, the % of the water and electricity that he uses, clothes, shoes, school supplies, costs of school functions, personal products such as toilet paper, deodorant, shampoo, soap, medications when he is sick, child care after school, toys and games, insurance since he refuses to carry it, etc, and you divide that by 2, well his measly $200.00 a month is way less than half of what it takes to support my son. So I don't feel I owe him a receipt on anything. As long as my son is well fed, clothed, has a roof, water, electricity, heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer, medicine when he needs it, school supplies that he needs, and a bed to sleep in, then that is all my ex needs to be concerned over. Since my ex only "bothers" himself with his son once every 3-5 months, and never calls him, then I don't really care what he wants to know about my finances.

Besides, what if I take $40 out of my paycheck and buy my child clothes, and then when I get the child support check I take out $20 (half) and buy myself something. Either way, I paid 1/2 of the clothes didn't I?

Yes, i do get child support. No I don't think that you should be asked are made to show receipts. If your child is dressed nicely and it's plain to see that the money is spent on them than why do you need to prove it. A lot of guys think that as long as you get that child support that's all that matters. I told my kids father that him sending that check every 2 weeks is you being a daddy. So when the check comes I tell them that there daddy is here. Child support can be spent on the child in many ways.

No. I recieve childsupport from my ex husband and it is used for many things. Child support isn't just for buying clothes or toys for you children. What about all the living expenses: rent, electricity, phone so they can talk to other parent, travel to and from school, daycare, childcare fee's.
If you have to produce a reciept for every cent you spend, your ex is still having a say on how you run your life, even though they are no longer a part of it.

I receive child support for my son and I've never had to show any receipts or proof that all is spent on him. Part of the grocery bill, electric, gas, phone, etc. are paid with a bit of the child support. How can a person provide proof of that? Maybe laws vary from state to state on whether proof needs to be shown.

I don't get child support. But those that pay child support have to take into account that paying rent and buying groceries, as well as paying utilities also count for supporting the child.
If someone wants to see receipts of that, then that's fine with me. But the courts do not require to show receipts to anyone.

no i don't get child support. my daughter's father does for her and visits her often. i believe a man does more when they aren't forced. don't get me wrong some men don't feel they should have to do for their child if they aren't with the woman anymore and you have to pit them on child support, but as for the receipts no you shouldn't have to show any. you have the child there with you. the bills you pay in the household is much more than the little change the government make the men pay.

Yes. I don't get child support and hope I never have to be in that situation. I do feel the the custodial parent should be forced to show a proof of what the child support money was used for. Yes the custodial parent has to provide clothing, a home, food, utilities for their child, but seriously, if they didn't have the child, they would still be paying for those things. I know far too many women (friends of mine) that will get their child support then go out and buy new clothes for themselves. It's not called "mother of child support," it's called "CHILD" support.

yes. most definetly. i watch court tv all the time and there is always a person who can't prove that s/he paid the child support and had to pay some big bucks to the other person. if you ever get into that situation then you will need the receipts.
