I wanted to buy a white stud belt he said no. He doesn't let me wear black nail polish because he thinks it's "Gothic", and thats probably why he won't let me buy the belt. He is not letting me be my own person. He wants me to be a girly girl: American Eagle, Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, and some other clothes that I don't really find my in my taste. He's being very unfair to my personality, and style. He wants me to be in khakis and polos until I'm out of the house (thats what it seems like) Even if I offer to spend my own money on these things he says no. My Mom is fine with it but seems afraid of my Dad when it comes to disagreeing. What can I do to have my own personality? I want to buy these kinds of clothings, but my dad thinks I'm going Goth, and I'm not, I'm kinda punk. So how can I be me wiithout my discrimminating Dad?

You're your own person and you can wear what you want to wear. I'd say, the only way to really get your dad to lay off is to compromise. The two of you should work together whereas you're wearing some type of the clothes he wants you to wear with accesories of your own style, so it's not "gothic" or "punk" it's just trendy without a label!

Um...punk is antifashion, not fashion. Hot Topic is not a place where real punks and goths tend to congregate, and punk started in the late sixties and picked up during the later half of the seventies. It's older than half the people on this forum. It existed before Green Day, MCR, FOB and Hot Topic, and it will probably be there when they are but faint memories. You are who you are no matter what you wear. And you seem to have that...that...teenage attitude, I-am-right-no-matter-what, and-furthermore-nobody-gets-it. If your Dad thinks dressing 'punk' makes you behave that way, of course he'll try to keep you in pastels! Mellow out, keep civil, be nice, show respect, mind your Dad, and maybe you'll get your buckly pants back. How's that?

You still have to show respect to your dad.. even if it seems he isnt respecting your desire to dress differently. As a parent myself, I just about cringe everytime my 14 yr old wants to dress in a way that I think is inappropriate. Its just because I love her, I m sure the same way your dad loves you.
Here is a suggestion, maybe borrow a few things from a friend and put on a fashion show for him in your own house.. ask him to be reasonable and open minded during this "show" make sure that you keep it low key and then ask him to critique what he likes and doesnt like. Ask him for some compromise. If you talk to your dad like an adult, he will more than likely give you a little room after he has seen that you can make some choices on your own. Don't expect too much from him, he is probably going to be stubborn, but remember its because he loves you.
I wish you lots of luck.

Your dad wants you to be the best girl you could be. Girls who dress as you describe as girly girl are the ones who attract guys and other girls who are the kind of people your dad wants you to have as friends. Kids who dress the way you want, usually have a repetition that most people would think they are on drugs and have violent tendencies. I'm not saying that you are that way, but others may think that you are that way. You dad wants you to be an all American girl, a girl who looks smart, acts smart and attracts smart people. My daughter would love to have clothes from American Eagle, and the others, but we can't afford those clothes. Be thankful your dad offers you those clothes!

Wear what you want to wear. Calling yourself punk is real lame though.. maybe you should stop with the labels or youre just like youre dad. Believe me, people would call you a poser.
