That nurse doesn't know what she is talking about. Real dental gold will not tarnish over time. I have seen gold crowns, onlays, and inlays that are 50 years old, and they look like they were put in yesterday.

That "yellow metal" is a base metal that is colored yellow. It is a cheap option that some dentists are offering. It is likely to corrode and tarnish over time.

The only thing I can think of is a crown. I work for a dentist who tells me that no one likes to place gold fillings anymore, because the process of pounding the gold into your tooth can be traumatic on the nerve of the teeth. Maybe your dentist is talking about a crown, or inlay/onlay which is made outside of the office in a dental labratory and then cemented on your tooth. A yellow metal may be a mixture of metals with a smaller percentage of gold, and more silver? Here is a link that may be of some help. It describes the different metals in crowns.

It is not clear as to which (ones) of your teeth you are talking about that need(s) crown(s). I will not touch 'yellow metal' and you are also advised to stay away, unless it is really gold.

Gold crowns give the most precise fit of all crown types since gold is an extremely workable metal. The preparation of a tooth for a gold crown is the simplest and least complicated preparation since there is minimal tooth structure removal. This allows for a large portion of the healthy tooth structure to remain untouched. Gold crowns also do not cause any wear on opposing teeth over time. There is no possibility of chipping and they offer a healthier environment for the gum tissue.

Hope this helps.

I'm an RN and I can't imagine anyone wanting to draw attention to a particular tooth in their mouth. First of all forget about the fake gold and secondly forget about real gold which also tarnishes over time. There are new types of fillings that can be chosen to match the color of the rest of your teeth. If it is the shape of the filled tooth that you are unhappy with a composite filling can be fused to the problem tooth so that it looks perfect. I had this done to one of my front teeth rather than get a crown and it was much cheaper. Have an evaluation done by another dentist so that you have more professional information which you can use to arrive at a decision. Gold teeth are not cool these days unless you are a senior citizen; my dentist told me so. Good luck to you.

And just to break it to people, white gold is cheaper gold. Yellow gold is the real deal.

Yellow metal is an alloy of different kinds of other metals; of course it´s cheaper and lesser quality than gold. High quality gold is excellent for fillings and restorative procedures; because it is maleable, resilient and 100% biocompatible, one of the cons is the aesthetics: it´s yellow and sparkles. Of course, nowadays there´s much better materials for that kind of procedure.

Why would you want gold or yellow metal in your mouth. I know what you mean about fillings, I had mine changed to white ones year ago and they are great.

I was lead to believe that you got gold teeth from a prison dentist, I don`t know if it true or not.

You can have a white filling, has your dentist not told you?
