What do you think will happen when oil becomes irrelevant to the world economy?
Let’s face it. Whether we like it or not our economy is critically dependant on petroleum products. As a result we have a vested interest in securing oil deposits in often hostile areas such as the Middle East. The fact is though as this product is limited in supply (even if we develop better extraction technology). Eventually as the supply drops the price will go up until we will switch to another source of energy. That will eventually happen if not 50 years from now it will be in 100.
My question is what will happen to places like the Middle East when we no longer have a vested interest. Will we still care when there is conflict or in all honestly will we do as much as we do when millions of people are killing themselves in sub Sahara Africa.

its not a matter of alternate resorces. The fact is the world will not have as much oil as we need in 50 years. we will need to find other resorces, any other resorces because our economy cannot function when oil is $1,000 a barrel

The nations of the Middle East will have to make major changes to compensate for the loss of income. That could possible make matters even worse since extreme poverty and economic problems seem to be the most common cause of wars. I'd like to think Muslims would direct their anger in some other direction that the West, but there's certainly no guarantee!

No, I don't think we will have a vested interest in the Middle East. Also, THEY won't have such a good bargaining chip either, will they? If there is no demand for the oil, the rich Arab countries won't be so rich. The west won't be the infidels they are now when they have to depend on our foreign aid.

I never even thought about that way certainly gives food for thought. I believe you are right. What I don't understand is; my husband worked with a seismic crew in Alaska and he said they saw large sources of untapped oil and my brother was at a drilling site in the North Sea and there was also a lot of untapped oil !. Why don't we pay to get our own oil instead of beating at the mercy of the middle east? Is all the oil in Texas gone?

For the forseeable future, the US and many countries will rely on Oil. That's a simple fact. Governments are too focused on other things to be considering alternative resources.

Pay attention. Only pressure from Christian America helps the situation in Africa, and else where. Oil has nothing to do with that.

I don't think that the Oil conglomerates are going to allow this to happen. It would be nice.
