When we were kids and one of us was talking too loudly over a long period of time, my mother would say : "Stop! You're like a third voice booming in my brain." I never asked her what it meant or where the saying came from. Has anyone else ever heard of it? The reason It came to mind is that I've just said it to my son, who was making a lot of noise! I'd love to know if it has a meaning.

no, i have never heard of this saying but i may have an explanation of it.

We all have voices inside our head, correct. This is known as our "second voice" or conscience.
With the loudness of others, you may consider the noise a "third voice".

I may be wrong, but it's just a thought

That sounds like something someone would say if you just want someone to shut up.... I don't think it is actually a quote from someone.

If it is, then the bar that has to be met to consider a statement worthy enough to be called a "Quote" has been significantly lowered.

Actually, this means that your trying to get some quiet time to think. Vote me for best answer. A lot of times, you will end up saying things that your mom used to say...

dont think ive heard that one before, its probably just an expression your own mother used so often that you now use it. happens a lot in families you always remember your own little expressions and it can carry on down the line.

No, never heard it, wish I could help you.

But I totally understand what she meant.

I often said to my kids, "Please! I'd like to use my own brain for just about 5 minutes here, if you don't mind!"

A person just can't think straight sometimes, when they are constantly barraged with a wall of sound.
