An American sub is the same as an Italian but replace the capicola (hot Ham) with bologna. Salami, ham, Bologna, American cheese. That's it

Usually turkey with ham and bologna. What makes it American is that it has a more than ample dollop of mayo.

There are different types of subs, but virtually any meat can be put in a sub. For example, turkey and swiss cheese, roast beef slices and provolone cheese. There is an 'Italian' sub which includes ham, salami, cheese, turkey, italian spices and perhaps oil and vinegar. You can go to subway.com to see other ideas.
