My favorite way to teach that one is to hold a treat in my closed fist and encourage the dog to get it while saying shake, come on buddy, shake, shake, shake, shake, well you get the idea, until the dog gets frustrated enough to paw at your hand, then, while the dog is pawing, turn your hand over and give them the treat with a lot of praise. This tends to work quickly, and is fun for dog and owner.

I have heard the best time to teach them is before you feed them. Use their regular food for a reward when they do things right and end training with a little play time. Do the same trick for a few days until they get the hang of it. Shake- pick up his paw and shake it (saying shake like a question) and reward him when you put the paw down. After doing this a few times hold out your hand for his paw first, and then give the command (picking up his paw and doing it for him if he doesn't get it by the 3-4th time, until he gets the hang of it) As you get to more advanced tricks like stay or roll over, do the trick in stages starting with tricks they know (like sit, lay down and then roll over). Walk the dog through what you what you want them to do by gently but firmly manipulating their body to do what you want (while repeating the command or hand signal as you go along) and reward them as they trust you and comply. Repetiton and consistancy is the key. Reward them promptly with treats and petting. Back up is an important command to get your pet away from stuff they shouldn't have, or from danger. Create a narrow path by pushing a couch away from the wall allowing space for you and your dog to stand single file but not for him to turn around. Stand in front of him and firmly tell him to "back up". Hold your hand like a traffic cop in front of his face and walk toward him (forcing him to back away from you. Reward him when he complies and repeat this after widening the space beween you and the dog (and the wall and the couch) until he will do it in open space without turning around. I think I've heard that dogs respond to more hand signals than voice commands so incorporate them in your training too.

Always use the exact same word for each trick - sit, stay, paw, no, good puppy etc etc. if the command fluctuates it will only confuse the lil one.
