Please explain. Why would anyone want to whiten their underarms? Am I missing something here?

It seems only I understand your pain.
U need to use a pumice stone .Use body scrubs w/the exfoliating salts, or beads in them.This tip is also excellent for a beautiful back, especially if u have a mate to scrub your back & underarms 4 u!! your skin will feel so smooth & sexy!!
The best thing to do; especially since winter is coming, u have to let the hair under the arms grow & pumice the area as often as u feel comfortable...
When u shave, use sharp razor,,not dull..that is part of the problelm. Use shaving cream always...never shave w/ soap.

u can use milk of calotropis prosera, be careful in using it. otherwise lemon juice +talc can do a lot

so is quicklime.
and whitewash.
