I can't find my passport. Can I apply for another even if the old one, wherever it is, has not expired??

Here is the governments info on lost passports.

There are two steps required to get a new passport. First, you must report your valid passport lost or stolen immediately. This is required of anyone who loses or has a passport stolen. The second step is to replace your passport. Both steps and forms required are described below.

go to the nearest US post office, there you will find all the info and documents you need! yes, you can get a replacements in 48 hours...but you got to live in a city with a passport agency...I had mine replaced in Miami!
