try blood red with gold trim or reverse it and paint it gold with red trim and curtains. any dark color will make your room look smaller. if you are going withmore modern japanese style u can use pink and yellow and use japanese flower prints on the walls, this will open the room up a little more

the prettiest japanese themed room i have ever seen was green. a really pretty, celadon green, like the color of the cups you see in the restraunts and the like. stick with pale ash wood, or a darker mahogany color, they both look great. just stay away from maples and oaks. using stainless steel or "wrought iron" looks would be very modern if you don't want to use woods. use black a small accent and match your major accent color to the color of the woods you use or use a creamy white. .
i dunno...red and black just seem so overdone. plus, using white a light green really will help your room feel more open.

A lot of folks are saying red but I got to tell you red is really hard to paint and it's going to make the room look a lot smaller. I recommend a warm camel/golden color which will make the room look larger with black and red accents. That will help you maximize the space. Good Luck!

It depends what take on Japan you want.
Hello Kitty? Pink.
Nationalistic? White with a big red circle (with rays coming out of it for a more militaristic look).
Average Japanese kid? Whatever's popular in American kids' rooms.
It's funny because someone in Japan is wondering what your room looks like so that they can have a (insert your nationality) room.

Beige, with wood moulding trim.
Keep the colors neutral and natural landscape colored.
No brights, or primary colors. Keep it serene and clean and peaceful. Japanese design is not about Red walls and Gold.

I'd say mostly beige or light colors with dark trim, except maybe *one* wall in dark red. Having one wall that's a different color will open the room up a lot.

Red is a good luck color in Japanese culture. But also remember that simplicity is very "Japanese" as well...
