Most of the pedophilia scandals that have erupted in my area have either involved Protestant groups, or were not related to religion at all (sports coaches have been, by far, the biggest regional offenders).
Having said that, I'm obviously not proud of this aspect of the Church. The abuse never should've happened, and the cover-up is inexcusable. However, many steps are being taken to remedy the situation. In my own parish, the priests' offices purposely contain clear glass, so everyone can see what they're doing. Abuse victims are openly encouraged to make reports, and priests will be removed for even the slightest suspicion of wrongdoing. I'm not saying that the situation is totally fine now, but people are waking up to the problem (remember that the average rank-and-file Catholic had no idea that this stuff was going on) and are ready to address it.
The Roman Catholic Church, despite its flaws, is still my church.

Clearly I have irked you since your questions are usually against Christians in general but now you want to target Catholics.
Bring it on! I love a good debate.
Catholics do not support the cover ups or the abuses.
There's a reason it's all coming out. God is cleaning house! I say HALLELUJAH!
As a Catholic, I am GLAD it's all coming out. And I will pay extra to help my church clean house.
As I mentioned earlier though, the statistics of public teachers abusing children is 10 times that of Catholic clergy. This is going on Right Now. Not 30 or 40 years ago. But there's no outcry when districts and schools cover it up.
Double standard...
The sad part of all of this is, just like women who cry rape when they have not been raped which makes it hard for the women who really have been assaulted and innocent men go to prison, I've seen some good priests be falsely accused. Even when proven innocent, they are dismissed.
very sad.
Do some research on false memory implantation. You might be surprised by what you find.

It bothers me that some of my donations are going to this and I am finding myself making donations less to the Sunday basket and more to specific charities or ministries to avoid supporting the defense.
As for covering it up, I recognize that the Church is staffed by fallible humans who followed societal ways. until the 70's no one talked about molestation and frequently the child was blamed or called a liar. The Church is coming to recognize that this is not a good method of handling things but like any institution staffed by humans, change is slow. Fortunately or not, there have been no accusations of recent molestations to determine if the new policies are being enforced. all accusations seem to predate the current policies and shouldn't be used as a challenge against the CURRENT church's handling of cases.

gracious, i thought you were done after you posted this daily for about a week -- same asnwers apply.... this is the minority not the majority. the same things happens in families -- what those men did was wrong and they should and will be punished. however it needs to get out of the media for the childrens sake - if you were a child of abuse - trust me - you wouldn't want the constant reminder - you would want healing.
BTW - links to any Catjolic information would not be rubbish -- that's as silly as saying the BBC link is rubbish. you ask the question of the organization and yet say their comments are rubbish - get a life.

Can you imagine the millions of children that have been raped by priests through the centuries? Lawsuits have finally brought this disgrace to public awareness.
