My lovely old percolator went to the big coffee shop in the sky this year...I've been trying to make my iced tea simply by boiling water in a pot on the stove, but I'm getting something wrong somewhere because it tastes absolutely blah. I'm trying to fill a 2.5 quart pitcher, which I usually fill with ice before I dump the tea in, so I try and make the tea strong--actually very strong, because I prefer it strong and I don't sweeten it. Any ideas on proportions of water/tea bags/ice to use? Should I not be boiling it?

Boil water; once boiling turn off stove, add teabags (I would put in at least 5) and allow to steep for 10 minutes; then pour over your ice. Sounds like you are putting in too much ice, try the pitcher just 1/3 or 1/2 full of ice.

Down south, sweet tea on the stove is one of the first things a girl learns how to make in the kitchen & that's how I've made it for 30 years. Take a 2 qt pan & pour in 1 qt water. Take 4 - 5 family size tea bags & tie strings together - I only use Lipton tea bags & add, then bring to a boil. Once it boils, turn off & let bags sit for about 15 - 20 minutes. Take pitcher & pour 1 cup sugar in the bottom then pour in hot tea. Stir to disolve sugar, then fill pitcher with ice. Place in fridge & let chill. Stir occasionally as ice melts & very well before 1st serving. Lemon is optional.

Try making it in the microwave. I use a 2 quart pitcher, filled about 2/3 with water, and 3 family size tea bags. Microwave for 7 minutes, pour over ice and add water to fill a gallon pitcher.

If you want to sweeten it, put the sugar in the bottom of the pitcher, pour the hot tea over it and stir till it's melted, then add ice and water.

If you need to make 2.5 quart of ice tea, the way you should do:
1.Always remember coffee or tea if you want to make iced version of it you must double the ingredient except the water. In this case you make tea so double the tea bag.
2.Boil 1 quart of water but don't boil the tea.
3.Put it's about 8 tea bag of lipton tea cut the string and stir until
really dark and cannot change darker anymore.
4.Add ice until 2.5 quart volume.
So remember 1quart hot tea+1,5 quart ice=2,5 quart iced tea and leave the bag in.
I know this cause I like ice tea too and already make thousand time for my costumer.

your problem may be that your boiling the tea bags. try to heat the water to boiling and removethe water from the heat source *** about 6 teabags. let it sit about an hour or until its the darkness u want. remove tea baga and add about a cup of sugar ( or to taste) and fill your container.
the problem with BOILING teabags is the teabags will release a chemcal called tanned which the american indians used to tan cowhides. so i hope this helped you

go and get tea bags like Lipton, get the ones for hot tea. put 5-6 tea bags in your coffee pot ware you'd usually put the coffee filter. you will be able to get two pots off tea this way. just put ice in the pitcher and pore in.
