The previous Skylines have not been made to U.S. spec and safety/emission standards. However, the next generation (released 2009) will be available on the U.S. market. It will most likely be tamed down somewhat from the original Japanese production model, and it'll be a far cry from the prototype, but it'll be good enough for most Americans. Personally I'd rather have an R32, 3, or 4 from one of the couple or few companies allowed to convert and sell them. Or just shove an RB26Dett in an Altima and scare the crap outta people. Might be cheaper too :)

Because Nissan hasn't built the Skyline to US specs. There is one company that is certified by the DOT to import and convert Skylines from Japan. The prices are very high, however, and the vehicles are all right hand drive.

japan has tougher emissions regulations then the US however we have tougher importing laws that restrict owners from buying a full blown r34(newest skyline). Motorex is still a great way to go however there is a cheaper way if you know how to do it .winkwink. If you were to transport a skyline here you would have do emissions regulation(unless you live in a state that doesnt require it like I do :D) and title transfer. plus if they imported them here and let all the kids with money and no common sense buy them where would the fun be???

Skylines were never imported officially to the us from Nissan. It was a bad move on their part, since the us is finally getting into jdm cars. As far as emissions go, they cant pass. japans standards arn't as strict as ours. You can tune them so they DO pass, but it take a weekend. I don't know how much you go to the drive through, but plan on going inside or going in reverse through the drive. the right handed drive makes it hard. I own a 2000 R34.

Because it doesn't meet the US DOT and NHTSA standards.
The place in CA that imports and converts it is called Motorex. Somebody asked this same question the other day and one guy answered that Motorex was still around his area. I'm not totally sure since I read it had shut down couple months back and the owner was in jail.
Just keep checking Ebay. Every now and then, you'll find a R32, R32, R34 on sale. But be aware, if the person selling is not in the US then it hasn't been converted to comply with US standards.

Nissan skylines are not U.S. street legal. Although they do have one dealer in california who sells left hand skylines but they are only allowed in the city they are sold in. They are originally only sold in japan.
