I think this will help you.
If you can't stop thinking of food and drinks. say to yourself, one more hour, at it will be over, and that hour is over, say to yourself one more hour, and on and on. You will get through it. Also, try not to stress over it, it will go faster, and much easier for you. Preoccupy yourself with other things, read, take a walk, work whatever keeps your mind from food.
I am not a Muslim, but I did fast Ramadan, so I know how it feels. I did it to know how it feels. I didn't do it on my own, I had a family friends who showed how to do it, and even had the Eftar with them, my family is open minded and never minded my desire to know the Muslims, and their religion. You can't understand other people, unless you try to be in their shoes, at least once, so I did one of their pillars out of respect and attempt to understand them.
Good Luck

Do you have a hobby? If you paint, play music, or do something else, it should keep your mind occupied and you will not realize the time going by.
The first few days are always the hardest for me. I've been fasting every Ramadan now for a very long time, and every year, the first 1 or 2 days, I call the "Cold Turkey" days are always the hardest. They are always there every Ramadan, and sometimes they shift down a day or two. During these days, I usually get headaches, real tired, and sometimes something silly can anger me.
But, once I get past these first couple of days, my body automatically remembers, and adjusts to the new routine, and Ramadan becomes very enjoyable and smooth sailing.
At the end of Ramadan, I begin to feel sad that it's going to be over. I wish it would continue for the entire year, but that's the mercy from Allah. Ramadan is intended to "break" your routine so that your mind and body can take a rest from the mundane and systematic cycles of daily living.

I converted in February. It is much easier when you wake up before sunrise and eat breakfast. Make sure to drink a lot of water. If I dont not wake up and eat before sunrise, I start getting hungry around 4 as well. Just ignore it. Know that fasting is for Allah and that Allah is watching at all times. Accountability helps. So it might be helpful to try and be around Muslims in the afternoon.

I'm not a Muslim - but I fast every year in the spring - a liquid fast - for anywhere from 5 to 10 days - and it's very spiritual. When you want to eat - just know that you have the power of God in you! Find God's strength in you - and use it to resist. I'm not positive - but I believe that's part of the reason behind the Ramadan fast - isn't it? To know the God within you?
Also - I think you should tell Joe Blanc that his advice is not advice at all!
Namaste!

you should start small, build up from there. Try fasting for the most you can with water, then lose the water...go for things like that. you're new to it, so don't start off too fast, or you won't be able to do it. trying not to think about food is good as well - distraction is important for people who have trouble fasting. if its a weekend, and you don't have too much to do, sleep your way through the day! its easy and energizing. wake up to pray though, of course.
;)
good luck my muslim sister!

Try eating a suhoor with alot of protein. Protein takes longer for your body to digest and you feel full for longer. My suhoor is usually a couple protein bars (South Beach makes really tasty ones), some yogurt and a few dates along with a couple VERY big glasses of water. I also get hungry and thirsty about 4 pm but it will pass. Distract yourself, take a nap, read Quran take a slow walk outside. Belive me, it gets easier every year.
