I have done it, and I have seen many people do it. I assume you're talking about a safe, sane and consensual agreement here, as in, "I will spank you, and I want you to let me spank you even though it will hurt, because I want you to show that you will accept the pain simply because I want to give it to you." Hopefully, you are _not_ talking about some Van Gogh-ish act such as cutting off your ear and sending it to your true love.
Antithetical? Perhaps "paradoxical" is a better word. It's a dynamic that certainly exists. It's not rational - what kind of sane person wants someone to hurt them, right? But a safe, sane and consensual exploration of those dynamics can reveal a lot about one's character, or provide an opportunity to "do over" bad incidents that happened to us in order resolve some inner conflict, or just be exciting, or whatever. People have many, many reasons for agreeing to a "power exchange".

To receive pain for some can be considered love. Plain and simple? Not so much. There are some who have been hurt in ways that would be painful but leave no marks. To those, we can only say, "Time heals all wounds". The wounds that are placed on the skin and leave marks can be an expression of love but the deeper question behind it all is, does the person you are offering your suffering to, know that this is for them? If they don't, then you should rethink your motives.

Sacrafice is one of the defining characteristics of love. So certainly one should be prepared to bare some form of pain to experience and express love. That said I don't think that anyone should intentionally inflict pain on someone they love.

I would take pain from the right person. I wonder if I am doing that right now because there is someone out there right now who is hurting a lot and it hurts me a lot to see this beautiful woman I know really sad.

There will always be excrutiating pain to balance the exquisite joy of love. You can't have one without the other.

Absolutely . . . but some people are into that. If you're NOT into it....then NO WAY. Your partner should love you enough to respect what you want and what you like. But definitely worth exploring and playing . . . gently.

Frank Zappa said it best in Broadway the Hard Way:
Any Kind of Pain
YOU'D TAKE ANY KIND OF PAIN FROM ME,
WOULDN'T YOU, BABY?
SINCE YOU HAVEN'T GOT A BRAIN,
LET ME JUST EXPLAIN:
ANY KIND OF PAIN
IS NEVER A MAYBE.
