This isn't quite the same but I had a tattoo that I didn't like and I have a cover up tattoo done over the top. It is difficult to change black and red apparantly so I would imagine that to redesign it might mean that you have to go quite a bit bigger. If there is a good tattooist near you he/she should be quite happy to talk about designs with you.

Go to the best reputed studio and talk to a top artist. He or she should be able to help with something that suits you and is able to be done. Keep talking until you are satisfied with your chosen design. Cover ups and change to original designs means your choices are narrowing. Don't get it wrong again or you might not be able to change it
But find the best you can even if it means traveling. Recommendation is a good way of finding a good artist
Good luck

My friend had a tattoo of a parrot on her shoulder which she got done when she was with an ex boyfriend, she went into a shop and they hand drew a picture of a rose over the top. Only one problem though it hurt like hell as it is over old scar tissue, but I guess it just depends on how big it is and what it is to how easy it is.

I would've thought that would be easy to adapt into some sort of celtic looking flower. I'm not entirely sure what you have in mind. Speak to the person you wish to do it and see what they say. They'll be more experienced and know exactly what they're on about...

All black is not easy or almost do-able to cover up...
I'm hoping it isn't gigantic...
best thing to do is head into a shop and have them try to add to it, cover it with something bigger...
good luck...
