Yes, I think all of us have wondered the same thing.
My personal opinion is that people sometimes try to disaprove the Bible because 1) they don't want to have any moral responsability to anybody, 2) they think that Religion has just caused too many problems, but atheism has affected people too (as you said, life doesn't make sense when you don't have any hope), 3) it's said that if you believe in Creationism --for example-- you're being gulliable, but if you believe in evolution, then you're a smart person, 4) people want to see for themselves what's out there, but they want to see other "truth" than the Bible; however, no one has ever found it.
These are some reasons I think people want to get rid of God and the Bible. You're right: everything has a purpose, why life wouldn't? One of my favourite authors --Clifford Goldstein-- wrote: "the finger has a purpose, the eye has a purpose, the ear has a purpose, the air has a purpose, the sun has a purpose--and yet these and untold other 'purposes,' so finely and majestically woven, culminate into purposelessness? More finely tuned than Bach's "Fantasia", more complex than Boolean algebra, and deeper dimensionally than Michelangelo's "Creazione di Alamo" --this creation, nevertheless, culminates into nothing? 'The more the universe seems comprehensible,' wrote physicist Steven Weinberg, 'the more it seems pointless.' But how can so many individual and finite things --replete with points, and opulent with purpose themselves -- so beautifully, precisely, and artfully climax into blunt nothingness? It's like a string of positive integers equaling zero." (see this book, http://www.adventistbookcenter.com/Detail.tpl?sku=0828017298)
Everything on this life has a purpose; it would be ironic if life woudn't have one, then it doesn't make sense, does it?
Life couldn't just happen, anything in nature does. It would be like computers raining down from the sky after a big explosion took place in a computer factory.

Unfortunately, most religions have a lot of made up stuff that they claim is from the Bible but Actually Isnt! And then they try to tell people they have to believe it Or Else! No wonder people get aggravated! You are right. The good old Bible, the real Bible, not all this made up stuff, is actually wise and comforting and invigorating and... the Only harm is that some people are Really Going to Make Fun of You if they find out you're getting into it. And that's the only "harm"! (I dare you.)

I think it has to do with people not wanting to feel accountability to some higher power or creative being. If the Bible is true (which I feel it is) then mankind has really messed this place up and we keep digging our own graves. So, try to prove it's false then you don't have to worry about what will happen to you.
There was an article I read at some point that gave information (sorry I don't remember the specifics or the stats) to show that when the theory of evolution was published, personal accountability dropped. Like there was an increase in violent crimes, crimes against people, etc. There were links drawn between the increase in crime to the sentiment that if a person isn't accountable for his works to God, then he will act in more selfish ways.
I'm not saying scientists who try to disprove the Bible are bad, violent people. But I think that it all stems from people not wanting to feel accountable to anyone else but themselves.
And that would be just ONE reason for it.

The problem is, some people insist that the Bible is fact, that it came directly from God and therefore must be obeyed. These people insist that EVERYONE must agree with their version/interpretation, instead of saying "what I believe if good for me, and what you believe is good for you."
You have, instinctively, found the best way to deal with the question of religion. There's no harm, and a lot of good, in everyone believing what they want to believe, without trying to force thier views on anyone else, and without someone else rushing and yelling "you're wrong and I'm right!"
Who cares if the Bible was edited by a perfect God or some dumb humans? Isn't the message of the story more important?
Live and let live, yah?

Many people who go to great lengths to disprove the Bible have not really read it, but do it as a reaction to people who claim to represent it. That is sad because The Bible contains much practical advise ; such as the golden rule which essentially says treat people as you want to be treated. It contains comfort for people who are distressed and oppressed. And it contains a wonderful hope for the future. What could be wrong with that?

I think that others try to disprove the bible because it is pushed in their face so much by christians. Christians think that their way is the only way, well to them it is, but not to everyone! It is no different than Christians trying to disprove Jewish, Muslim, pagan, atheist or agnostic beliefs. I think that if Christians would totally back off of the other religions then there would be more harmony between religious beliefs. We should all be left alone to believe as we feel is right for our "soul".

I don't care what anyone else chooses to believe so long as they don't try to impose their beliefs on others. As for religion bringing hope. Yes, it seems to bring hope to many, but is it a false hope? Personally, I would rather face reality, warts and all, than close my eyes and believe even the most beautiful, comforting fantasy. But that's my choice. I don't choose for others.
I don't worship the Christian God for the same reason Christians don't worship Zeus. I don't believe such a being exists or ever existed. To worship a fantasy would be a waste of time--and, as we all know, our time on earth is finite. It should not be squandered.

If only people who read the bible (or any "holy" book) WOULD just keep peace in their lives and not use it to try to interfere with anyone else. the world would be a much better place.

Not speaking for the others, but for me it comes down to a 2 things:
- Keeping ID, creationism, and all other forms of folklore out of science
- Creating and keeping laws based solely on the notion that a fantastical know-it-all-create-it-all old man in the sky would disapprove/approve of it off the books.

it is a demanding question to respond to for numerous motives. the first is that the time period 'non secular nut' is amazingly relative and probable no longer a mainstream time period as, say, fundamentalist. That pronounced a 'nut' might want to need to probable perfect be defined as someone who's closed minded sufficient to insist that their way is the only perfect way and insist on declaring this theory to the global without asking if all persons is in touch first.
