I explain to my students the difference between tattling and reporting. Tattling is telling on someone just to get them in trouble. Reporting is telling an adult when someone is getting hurt or hurting others. When a student comes up to tell me something about someone else, I stop them and ask if it is tattling or reporting. If they say it's tattling, I let them know that I don't want to hear about it. If it's reporting, I'll listen and we can take action from there. They usually only say it's 'reporting' one or two times when it's really tattling before starting to 'check' themselves before coming to me. It's helped tremendously in a classroom of 22 7 and 8 year olds!

Yes, I agree...a tattle tale is extremely annoying. I am an elementary school teacher and also a mom, so I have seen my share of tattle tales. Not all children do this. Those that do, I refer to as suffering from "Nellie Olsen Syndrome" (Little House on the Prairie). Inevitably, every year, I have at least one in my class. I explain the difference between tattling to get someone else in trouble and tattling to prevent injury or destruction to property. They learn the difference quickly when I send BOTH the offender AND the tattler to time out or recess suspension for trivial tattling. This is my cure for "Nellie Olsen Syndrome" in my classroom and at home with my own children. Try it...it might work in your situation, as well. Good Luck!

Tattle-Tale Children do so because they're looking for attention...try giving her a little more...then...when you have HER attention and a little admiration, you can tell her you'd like to have a "heart to heart" special talk with her about why people don't like Tattle-Tales, make up a few examples of how they can be hurtful. Little Tattle-Tales grow up to be Big Gossipers. Who likes em?

Crulest method (probably not so effective if she tattles) is to outcast her, but i alone do not approve of this method.
An easy way to really get her to stop is to have a quiet sitdown with her and explain to her when to tattle and when not, i.e. good situations and bad situations. The more annoyed you get from the cause of her tattling will only fuel her desire to tattle more.

Draw a picture or find one in a magazine of an ear. Put it up on the wall and tell her to go tell the tattle to the ear. It sounds crazy but it does work with some children. Sometimes they just need someone to tell. Good Luck!

She's at that age where being "The Informer" is natural. She wants to feel like she's got one up on someone. Someday, the younger cousins will reach "The Informer" stage, and when they start tattling on your niece, it's time for dinner AND a show. Enjoy.

Tell her that everytime she tattles on someone, a fairy loses her wings, causing her to fall to the ground, where she is eventually devoured by some woodland creature. If she doesn't want the fairies to die, then she shouldn't tattle on others. If she doesn't like fairies, try using something else that she likes, just make sure it flies. Everybody likes things that fly.

Tell her the next time she does you'll tell her mother that she was the one doing the thing the person she tattled on did. The truth of the matter is it isn't up to you as an aunt to discipline her. It's up to her parents.
