My husband and I had a very small wedding (only my mother attended). I want to have a large party and invite all of our friends and family for our one year anniversary...We got married on July 8th so it will be easy to plan a 4th of July themed get together (barbeque). I want this to be a very casual get together, just time for our friends and family to hang out and get to know eachother and have a good time. My question is would it be weird to do the things that are typically done at the reception right after the wedding a year later? I.E. Wedding cake, father/daughter dance, taking off the garter, etc etc...

I think a tiered cake and general dancing is fine, & also, toasts or speeches would be nice, to add a touch of honor and purpose to the occasion.

I think the "first dance" things and the garter and such wouldn't be a very good idea. The window of time for that has sort of passed, you know? It would just be strange.

Congratulations, and my husband and I were also just married on July 8th. I think your plan would be wonderful and I do not think that people would think it would be too strange to have all of those things you missed out on. However, You might skip the garter toss, and bouquet toss since you arent wearing a wedding dress and carrying the bouqet (but it's just my suggestion do what makes you happy). Instead of having these a nice replacement might be an anniversary dance, in which you ask all of the married couples to take the floor, then after about a minute you ask for their attention and ask for all of the couples who have been married less than 5 years to take their seats (and applaud them) then 10, 20 and so on, until you find the couple who's been married the longest. You congratulate that couple and present them with some small gift, maybe the bouquet and garter from last year. One more thing, rather than saving the top tier of the cake for your 1st anniversary, eat from that, and serve the rest of the guests.

Of course it would be weird - it would be icky.
You had the wedding you chose at the time, and that should be the memory you cherish. You don't get a do-over (hopefully you will not divorce!)! All the things you mention do not take place a year later, regardless of the circumstances. If you regret it, that's too bad...
If you want a party, have one, but make it just a happy gathering for your family and friends.

I would say go for it and have fun.
If you want to do wedding activities, call it a vow renewal.

The one thing you don't want is for you be in formal wedding garb while your guests are casual.

I think it's a GREAT idea. It may be unusual, but then - every relationship is unique. Go for it and have fun! I'm sure your guests will be delighted.
